UFC 212 -- Jose Aldo vs. Max Holloway: Five storylines to follow in Brazil
The featherweight title is on the line this week in Rio de Janeiro
This main event has been months in the making. When Jose Aldo and Max Holloway meet for the UFC featherweight title on Saturday, it will be the veteran against the up-and-comer. For those who have followed Aldo's career, it's kind of crazy to think of him as the wily veteran, but at 30-years-old, he will enter the Octagon five years older than his opponent.
He's also had one of the most storied runs as an MMA champion in his 13-year career.
But his opponent is no pushover. In fact, he brings one of the longest active winning streaks in MMA to the Octagon. Let's take a look a that and more as we get ready for UFC 212.
1. Aldo's longevity as champion: It's easy to overlook now just how good Aldo has been in his career, but we're going to look back at his reign as champion similar to that of Anderson Silva and Georges St-Pierre. Aldo went nearly a decade without losing a fight, winning 16 times in that span. He reigned as WEC/UFC featherweight champion from 2009 to 2015 before being knocked out by Conor McGregor in 13 seconds. Now, he's champion once again and could start building another impressive streak.
2. Holloway's incredible run: Since losing to McGregor in 2013, Holloway has not tasted defeat again, and he's beaten an impressive set of challengers in the process. He's scored victories over Cub Swanson, Charles Oliveira, Jeremy Stephens and Ricardo Lamas en route to earning his interim title win over Anthony Pettis last December. Considered one of the most well-rounded fighters at 145 pounds, this could be just the beginning for Holloway's success in UFC.
3. Claudia Gadelha's need for a stoppage: The co-main event on Saturday will feature two fighters who have a combined three losses in their careers. They have all come at the hands of women's strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Now, Gadelha and Karolina Kowalkiewicz will battle for another chance at the champion. Gadelha is 2-2 in her last four fights and is coming off a unanimous decision win over Cortney Casey last November. For Gadelha to really turn some heads and get a buzz around her, she will need to score a stoppage. She only has eight of them in her 16 career fights and has yet to score one in UFC. Her last came in 2014 with a TKO over Tina Lahdemaki.
4. Kowalkiewicz's bounce back: Kowalkiewicz has not fought since losing to Jedrzejczyk last November. The biggest thing for her will be moving on from the first loss of her professional career. Sometimes when fighters reach the top of the sport and fail, they are never the same fighter again. Although she lost to Jedrzejczyk as an amateur, being on the big stage of UFC 205 can be a difficult loss to overcome. Kowalkiewicz has also not scored a stoppage since 2014.
5. Vitor Belfort's last ride: "The Phenom" has vowed to continue fighting after Saturday night, but this is expected to be his final fight with UFC. The man who fights at 185 is most famous for winning the heavyweight title over Randy Couture in 2004 after competing in the UFC 12 heavyweight title tournament seven years earlier. But time has not been kind to Belfort, as he has lost three of his last four fights by TKO and his last fight against Kelvin Gastelum, which he also lost by first-round TKO, was overturned to a No Contest after Gastelum failed a drug test. Now, Belfort will face Nate Marquardt in a fight of legends looking for one last run.
