It wasn't exactly the most shocking thing ever, but it certainly had to be a little jarring for the Celtics when Ray Allen took less money and chose the Miami Heat.
And while Boston is moving on and trying to make sense of it (Doc Rivers even tried to take the blame), in an interview with the team website team captain Paul Pierce admitted what we all figured: He's a "little bitter" about Allen leaving and that it will be "weird" seeing him in a Heat uniform.
"Ray made the best decision for him," Pierce said. "That's what it's all about: You get in these situations, you become a free agent, and you make a decision based on what's best for you and your family. Ray will always be a brother for me. If it wasn't for him, I probably wouldn't be wearing a championship ring. So the things he was able to do for this organization, will never be forgotten."
Pierce was asked if he's talked to Allen since his decision.
"A couple texts," he said. "I'm a little bitter that he went to Miami, but he's still a brother of mine."
The Celtics moved quickly to rebuild their roster, signing Jason Terry and dealing for Courtney Lee. Boston is picking the pieces up and Pierce approves of the moves.
"I thought Danny did a good job of trying to replace Ray Allen," he said. "As you know Ray Allen went off to Miami, on his choice, but he was a great teammate, it was fun playing with him. But I think the guys coming in here -- Jason Terry, Courtney Lee, trying to get a healthy Jeff Green, even some of our rookies -- I think we''ve added a lot more depth, and it's going to take a lot of pressure off me this upcoming season."
If you're wondering, the first time Pierce and his Celtics teammates will look across at Allen in a Heat jersey is opening night in Miami. If he thinks it's weird now, just wait.
