Grizzlies guard Mario Chalmers waived after rupturing Achilles
The Grizzlies have no point guards and one center as injuries continue to rack up for the fifth seed.
The Memphis Grizzlies announced Thursday that point guard Mario Chalmers suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon Wednesday night in a loss to the Boston Celtics and will miss the remainder of the 2015-2016 season. To create a roster spot for Memphis, down to seven healthy players Wednesday night, the Grizzlies also waived Chalmers. From the Grizzlies' press release:
“Mario did an incredible job for us since coming to Memphis,” Grizzlies General Manager Chris Wallace said. “Right from the start, he embraced his change of scenery and endeared himself to his teammates and coaches on the court and the Memphis community off of it.”
“He has been an important part of our success this season, both coming off the bench and when called upon as a starter,” Wallace said. “But with Mario’s season-ending injury and our already depleted roster, it became necessary to free up a roster spot.”

The Grizzlies have now suffered season ending injuries to Marc Gasol, Brandan Wright, and Chalmers. Mike Conley and Chris "Birdman" Andersen are out the next 1-3 games with injuries, and Zach Randolph and Matt Barnes have both had to miss time with soreness. Jordan Adams has yet to play this season with injuries. They currently have seven healthy players, including P.J. Hairston and Ryan Hollins. They have no healthy point guards, and Hollins is their only healthy center.
Memphis has a nine-game lead for a playoff spot, with the third-most-difficult remaining schedule. They finish the season against the Warriors, at the Clippers, and in Oracle for the fourth and final meeting vs. the Warriors, on a back to back.
Things are not great in Memphis right now.
