Fulfilling one of the promises he made when he decided to come back to Cleveland two years ago, LeBron James brought a championship to Northeast Ohio in June. But winning a title was not all James wanted to do in his return to Cleveland as the Cavs superstar also wanted to give back to the community and help his hometown of Akron in any way that he could.

Through the LeBron James Family Foundation, James has created a partnership with the University of Akron, where select inner-city high school students that keep their grades up can get a full ride to the school. James' foundation created this program last year, but on Wednesday LeBron announced that he will be doing even more to ensure that Akron youth get a college education.

To help the high school students in his program get the proper support and tutoring they need to get into college, the LJFF has created the I PROMISE Institute at the University of Akron. The institute will also provide support to the students when they are enrolled at the university.

The LJFF's website has more details on the I PROMISE Institute:

The I PROMISE Institute will be located in a currently undeveloped space on the south end of level 3 in InfoCision Stadium and will have a team of educators dedicated to researching best practices, implementing academic interventions, and providing around-the-clock support for its students as they navigate college.

"When we first started this program, I wanted my kids to graduate from high school. But the more we grow as a Foundation, the more we find can be done to give our kids the best chance to be successful," said LeBron James. "We don't just want our kids to get to college, we want them to graduate from college. And we want to make sure we are doing everything we can to help them do that."

With LJFF's first class of Akron I PROMISE Network students now in 8th grade, the I PROMISE Institute is currently conducting research on resources and support programs around the country to determine the best tactics and procedures to have in place by the time its students arrive on The University of Akron campus in 2021.

...

In the near term, the I PROMISE Institute will be a home-base for all future high school Akron I PROMISE Network students, acclimating them to life on a college campus while offering programming for students, parents, and their entire families about the logistics and other learnings of the college experience.

James never went to college himself but he understands the importance of a college education. Plus James and his foundation are increasing the number of college educated people in Akron through his program and the I PROMISE Institute, which should in turn help the city prosper. It is quite admirable how much James is doing to help his hometown, but as he always says, he's just a kid from Akron so the city and the people who live there mean the world to him.
