LeGarrette Blount on Trent Richardson: 'I would not like that pick'

NEW YORK -- A lot of mock drafts -- including four of the six that we have freshly updated for your viewing pleasure -- have the Buccaneers selecting Alabama running back Trent Richardson. The premise of this is Greg Schiano's willingness to run the ball. And then run some more. And then run some more after that.

How would this sit with current running back LeGarrette Blount? Um, not very well. I asked him on Tuesday what he thought of that projection.

"I would not like that pick," Blount said at Nike's unveiling of the new NFL uniforms in New York City. "I would definitely not be happy with that pick."

Blount stressed that he wants to be a feature back, and when asked about the possibility of taking on a Brandon Jacobs-like role, he expressed, in no uncertain terms that he wouldn't want to simply be a goal-line guy.

"I don't want that role," Blount said.

Blount believes he's the type of player who can be a feature back. His production his first season -- more than 1,000 yards in just seven starts -- backs up that notion. But Blount struggled last year, as his yards per carry fell to 4.2 (from an even five).

Additionally, it's hard to imagine that new Bucs coach Greg Schiano will take all that kindly to the idea that Blount isn't happy about any draft pick, even if you can see the running back's argument.
