Even in late June, the time of year when NFL news is glacially slow, Tim Tebow is a story. We fully recognized that we're part of the problem -- the media bears sole responsibility for the various iterations of Tebowmania, but we're not afraid to admit that, like most reality television (and, really, that's what this is), we can't look away.
So if you are uninterested in the latest Tebow minutiae, please quit reading now. For everyone else, you know the routine...
Tebow, who played collegiately at the University of Florida, made a recent appearance at the Gator Boosters annual summer board meeting. In an of itself, not particularly newsworthy, even by Tebow standards. But the former Heisman Trophy winner spoke frankly and without the platitudinous talking points we've all become numb to since his NFL arrival in 2010. Via Gatorzone's Chris Harris, here's Tebow on his former Broncos teammate, backup quarterback Brady Quinn.
“So many guys come up to me and say, ‘What's it like to be at the University of Florida? What's it like to be a Gator?' The first thing I think of is, ‘Wouldn't you like to know,'" he said. ... "I had a teammate at Denver who played the same position as me and he went to the University of Notre Dame. He would brag about his university, how great it was. Most of us in the locker room were like, ‘C'mon, we all had opportunities. We chose not to go there.' ... But he talked so much about his university that it became easy. I'd say, ‘Your whole team had one guy who ran under a 5.0 40 [yard dash]. Our kicker ran under 5.0.' ”
That's as close to public smack-talking as you'll see from Tebow. Honestly, it's refreshing to know that he's not an emotionless robot. Also worth mentioning: in February, Quinn questioned just how genuine Tebow really was.
"If you look at it as a whole, there's a lot of things that just don't seem very humble to me," Quinn told Yahoo Sports at the time. "When I get that opportunity, I'll continue to lead not necessarily by trying to get in front of the camera and praying but by praying with my teammates, you know?"
Shortly thereafter, Quinn tweeted that "The comments attributed to me in a recent magazine article are in NO WAY reflective of my opinion of Tim and the Broncos," but that genie isn't going back in that bottle.
Either way, it's nice to see Tebow open up, even if momentarily. He also spoke about the Broncos' Pursuit of Peyton Manning this spring, called new coach Rex Ryan "a really cool guy," reiterated that he and quarterback Mark Sanchez "have a great relationship," and channeled CBSSports.com's Pete Prisco on the million-dollar question: What does Tebow need to do to become a better quarterback: "Everything."
