Report: Tim Tebow trade 'forced' on Woody Johnson

By Will Brinson | NFL Writer

The Tim Tebow experiment in New York was an unmitigated disaster. Tebow was ineffective and unused, and the Jets trading for him now looks like a waste. But there might some drama yet to unfold as the conventional wisdom that owner Woody Johnson forced the trade on the franchise is now being flipped on its head.

Johnson reportedly told general manager candidates during interviews that the Tebow trade wasn't his idea. One of those candidates, former Broncos GM Ted Sundquist, said Johnson informed him that the trade was "forced" on Johnson and team president Neil Glat.

Additionally, Sundquist said the duo that ultimately runs the Jets clearly wanted to get out from under the weight of Tebowmania.

"They realized it was divisive and hard on the locker room, and they wanted an exit strategy," Sundquist told Rich Cimini of ESPN New York.

It's hard to blame the Jets for wanting to rid themselves of Tebow. And it's believed by most that the team will ultimately decide to rid themselves of the Tebow circus before the 2013 season begins (and likely before free agency).

But it's also weird, because Woody's sounded pretty pro-Tebow over the past year. He reportedly was set to push since-fired GM Mike Tannebaum and coach Rex Ryan to start Tebow, and he made no secret of his feelings about the quarterback while speaking at the Republican National Convention in August.

"I think you can never have too much Tebow," Johnson, a delegate for Republican nominee Mitt Romney, said.

Apparently Woody's gotten his fill. Or, at least, realized how bad the whole Tebow fiasco looked and decided to pin the move on someone else who's no longer with the organization.
