Carson Wentz's girlfriend caught him watching game film on date night
The Eagles' rookie quarterback takes his job very seriously
Carson Wentz has had a storybook start to his NFL career. Three weeks ago he was the Eagles' third-string quarterback and then, after Sam Bradford was traded to Minnesota, Wentz was elevated to starter.
Through two games, the No. 2 pick in the 2016 draft has exceeded every expectation -- and we don't mean he's been busy handing the ball off to Ryan Mathews and Darren Sproles; Wentz has completed 43 of 71 passes for 468 yards and three touchdowns and -- perhaps most impressive -- no interceptions.
The Eagles are 2-0 and suddenly darlings of the NFC.
In the weeks and months leading up to the draft, the consensus among experts was that Jared Goff was the top-rated quarterback and Wentz was behind him. Part of the evaluation had to do with Goff playing at Cal and Wentz competing against mostly FCS opponents at North Dakota State. That probably played a part in the Browns' decision to trade out of the No. 2 pick and allow the Eagles to move up and take Wentz.
The draft remains more art than science, even as the Browns' latest approach to fixing their myriad ills includes a focus on stats-based analysis. And perhaps if they had known about this little nugget from the New York Post, it would have been enough to persuade them that Wentz was, in fact, their guy:
"While Wentz has since turned pro and become Philadelphia's prized franchise quarterback, [girlfriend Melissa] Uhrich continues to support him as she did during their college years. And while she won't hesitate to take his cellphone away during date nights -- he was caught watching game film under the dinner table -- she understands how much her boyfriend is dedicated to his craft."
Put that in your statistical model, Paul DePodesta.
(We're joking, by the way. Not a year goes by when a desperate team doesn't overdraft for a quarterback only to have it blow up in their face and set them back another 2-3 seasons. But this is the Browns, where every instinct they have is wrong. Which means the opposite would have to be right. Right?)
