Wake got a new deal. (USATSI)

The Dolphins made an odd move on Saturday afternoon, announcing a contract extension with a 34-year-old pass rusher.

Miami handed out a two-year extension to Cameron Wake, who is coming off a season where he tore his Achilles.

“We are pleased that we were able to reach an extension with Cam,” Mike Tannenbaum said in a statement from the team. “He sets the right example both on and off the field, working his way up from an undrafted college free agent to a four-time Pro Bowl selection. We are excited how he will fit in this new defense and continue to be a key contributor.”

Miami citing Wake's ability to make his way up from being undrafted is just weird. What does that have to do with the expectation of Wake producing over the next three years as a member of the Dolphins defense? Rewarding people for past production is bad business in the NFL but it appears Miami did just that.

According to Schefter, the deal is worth $15 million over the two years with $10 million guaranteed.

Miami's defensive setup from a pass-rush standpoint is odd. They let Olivier Vernon walk in free agency. Not paying him what the Giants would pay him was understandable, but at least just franchise tag him.

Instead the Dolphins added Mario Williams in free agency and re-upped with Wake. If the two pass rushers can produce at a high level in 2016, the Dolphins defense will be dangerous.

Wake has 70 sacks in 85 career starts so there's reason to believe he'll have a nice bounceback, despite the lack of explosiveness you typically see from Achilles injuries. If they don't the Dolphins elderly offseason will look questionable.
