Five weeks into the NFL season, Dallas Cowboys rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott has rushed for a league-leading 546 yards. On the strength of back-to-back-to-back 130-plus yard performances, Elliott is up to 5.0 yards per carry and 109.2 yards per game.

He's doing things that haven't been done by any rookie running back in Cowboys history (100-plus yards in three straight games) and have only been done by two rookie running backs in NFL history (130-plus in three straight games). Not only that, but he is out-rushing entire teams.

It should be noted that three of those 23 teams (the Panthers, Packers, and Eagles) have only played four games to Elliott's five and thus are averaging more rushing yards per game than Elliott, but still: he's run for more yards than 23 teams! (And more per game than 20 teams!) Let's take a look at a chart.

That seems pretty good! How does it compare to previous seasons?

The leading rusher in the NFL in 2015 was Adrian Peterson, who ran for 1,485 yards. That total was more than seven teams. In 2014, the leading rusher was DeMarco Murray (1,845 yards), who out-rushed 20 teams. LeSeason McCoy led the NFL with 1,607 rushing yards in 2013, surpassing the total of 11 teams.

Since the NFL expanded to 32 teams back in 2002, the NFL's leading rusher has, on average, out-rushed 14.9 teams. The only times anyone rushed for more yards than 23 or more teams were 2003 and 2013, when Jamal Lewis and Adrian Peterson, respectively, rushed for over 2,000 yards and each personally gained more than 24 teams.
