Rob Gronkowski is arguably the best player in all of football -- so long as he's playing tight end. When given the chance to demonstrate his versatility outside of blocking, catching, and steamrolling defenders on Friday, Gronk failed.

At practice on Friday, the Patriots, who will be without quarterback Tom Brady for the first four games of the season, drew up a trick play for their tight end. That trick play was supposed to end with Gronk completing a pass.

Gronk completed the pass all right.

Details:

Don't worry, Gronk had an explanation prepared when he was asked if McCourty bragged about his interception.

"Not yet, but I'm sure when I see him, he's going to let me know that he picked it off," Gronk said, per CBS Boston. "But it was one of the best punts out there, right on the one-yard line. That's how I'm looking at it."

Sure enough, McCourty had something to say.

"He has to live with that now, that the only pass he's thrown was picked off," McCourty said, per the Boston Herald's Jeff Howe. "He probably should have done a better job."

McCourty just threw Bill Belichick's DO YOUR JOB in Gronk's face.

So, to conclude, Julian Edelman is still the Patriots' best candidate for emergency quarterback. Unless this is all just a Belichick smokescreen before he unleashes QuarterGronk in the team's regular-season opener against the Cardinals.

Without Brady, the Patriots might need to get more creative than usual, and I'm not sure there's anyone on the planet who would be opposed to seeing Gronk line up under center.
