John Madden underwent successful heart surgery the NFL announced on Thursday. The former Raiders coach and Hall of Famer was released from a San Francisco hospital the league announced.
Madden, who serves with Ronnie Lott as the co-chair on the NFL Player Safety Advisory Panel and is chair of the Coaches Subcommittee to the Competition Committee, underwent the surgery to repair blockages.
“I spoke to John yesterday,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said. “He sounds great, but is frustrated about being on injured reserve for the time being. He is anxious to return to action soon doing the important work he does for our game. He’s a tremendous fountain of ideas and we can’t wait to get him back. We are all pleased to know that John’s procedure was successful and wish him a speedy recovery.”
Madden, 79, is one of the legendary faces of the league, winning a Super Bowl with the Raiders, serving as the name for the Madden football video game and working as a broadcaster with CBS and Fox for a long period of time.
