LOOK: Johnny Manziel hangs out with Heisman winner Lamar Jackson
The former Heisman winner and NFL Draft bust meets the newest winner of the trophy
Lamar Jackson strolled to the Heisman Trophy on Saturday night in New York more easily than he usually strolled to touchdowns in 2016. He netted the award with 2,144 points en route to becoming the youngest winner of the award. Everyone agrees he has a promising NFL future, which is why seeing him hang out with former Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel afterward is a little concerning.
Manziel won the Heisman in 2012 after a record-setting year at Texas A&M, becoming the first freshman to win the award. As a former winner, he has an annual invite to the ceremony, which means he's probably getting a hotel room in New York City and hanging out for the night.
Part of that hanging included spending time with Jackson and the famous trophy.
The immediate reaction here is RUN LAMAR RUN.
Manziel is probably a super fun dude and he's also really famous. So you can see the draw to hanging out with him. "Oh man that's Johnny Football." And simply spending time with Manziel isn't going to send Jackson off the rails.
But Manziel's story is the definition of a cautionary tale. After two remarkable years in college, Manziel left for the NFL and was drafted by the Browns in the first round. He will be remembered as one of the biggest busts and/or washouts in NFL history, although falling to the later portion of the first round (the Browns drafted Justin Gilbert earlier) makes him less of a disaster.
There are all kinds of concerns about his behavior off the field, including rumors he showed up to practice late in 2015 inebriated as well as a documented history of inordinately robust partying. Recently the unemployed quarterback dropped nearly $35,000 celebrating his own birthday.
He is the kid that your mom really doesn't want you hanging out with in high school. Even an innocent photograph is a concern if you're a Lamar Jackson fan.
Hopefully Manziel at least gave him some decent advice about the best and worst places to play football.
