Michael Vick, nearing 36, says he has one more NFL season 'in my blood'
Michael Vick's 13th NFL season was one of his least productive -- and it could also be his last.
Michael Vick's 13th NFL season was one of his least productive. Signed by the Steelers in August to serve as Ben Roethlisberger's backup, Vick was thrust into duty in Week 3 when Roethlisberger suffered a knee injury. He would go on to make three starts before a hamstring injury in Week 6 forced him to the bench.
By the time Roethlisberger returned a few weeks later, Landry Jones had been elevated to backup duty while Vick was relegated to running the scout team. But even though he last saw the field on October 18, Vick, who was drafted first overall in 2001, says he wants to play one more season.
“I’m 35, about to turn 36,” Vick told the DailyPress.com's David Teel. “I’ve got one more dedicated season in my blood, if somebody needs me to come in. But I’m kind of happy where I am right now."
Last November, Vick was buried on the depth chart but made it clear that he'd love to return to Pittsburgh.
“Absolutely, I'd definitely come back here,” Vick said at the time. “Great people, great staff, great teammates. That's what I fell in love with, my teammates, a bunch of great guys. That's what Mike Tomlin told me before I came in, that there were a lot of good guys in this locker room, and it's awesome.”
And Vick said he'd want to return even if it meant backing up Roethlisberger and Jones.
“Absolutely," he said. "That's what this game is all about, it's all about competition, it's all about seeing how far you're willing to go to make yourself a success or find success. Whatever it takes to help this football team.”
Barring the unforeseen, the Steelers won't re-sign Vick. And if none of the other 31 teams come calling, Vick sounds like he's OK with that too.
“I’ve got my health, I’ve got my kids, I’ve got my family," he told the DailyPress.com. "The game has done so much for me in terms of relationships, opportunities to take care of myself and my family. I’m just thankful. I give all the credit to God.”
