NFL playoffs: What to know for divisional games
Aaron Rodgers is going to be awfully hard to beat at Lambeau, as is Manning at Denver. And let's hope the refs don't take center stage again.
Things to know this weekend: Seattle and Carolina have met three times with this cast of characters, all in Carolina, and the combined three game score was 41-28 with the Seahawks winning all three. Cam Newton threw only one TD pass in those three games and failed to rush for a score.
Some more tidbits:
- Aaron Rodgers has gone against a Rod Marinelli defense 11 times with a 10-1 record and 21 touchdown passes.
- Broncos' DeMarcus Ware may have 10 sacks, 20 hits on the QB and 15 tackles for a loss this year but in the last four weeks he has 0 sacks, 0 QB hits and 1 tackle for a loss.
- Peyton Manning has only thrown three TD passes in his past four games or one TD every 30 throws.
- Patriots CB Darrell Revis is 0-3 against the Ravens with no interceptions.
- Steve Smith has been targeted 47 times with 30 receptions.
- Tom Brady may be 6-3 against the Ravens but he has one more interception (10) than touchdowns (9).
- Russell Wilson; he is 10-1 at home when sacked three or more times.
Officials under the microscope: Last week in the Wild-Card Weekend games there were 54 penalties called, a few flags picked up and a number of missed calls -- led by the non pass-interference call in the Lions-Cowboys game.
The truth is the officials are in a no-win situation right now. It will be a shame if this week's games have controversial calls like last, leavinig fans are up in arms once again. Last year in the divisional round there were 49 penalties called, five fewer than this season's Wild-Card weekend.
The last thing I want to see is Mike Pereira and Mike Carey telling the viewing public the wrong calls being made on the field, or even worse -- having Dave Blandino on the NFL Network on Monday saying there were more wrong calls.
Record against postseason teams: With eight remaining QBs, here are their records this season vs. playoff teams (including last week's games):
- Brady is 4-1 with 12 TD and 4 interceptions.
- Manning is 2-3 with 13 touchdowns and 9 interceptions.
- Andrew Luck is 3-4 with 11 touchdowns and 9 interceptions.
- Joe Flacco is 3-4 with 10 touchdowns and 5 interceptions.
- Russell Wilson is 5-1 with 8 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.
- Aaron Rodgers is 3-2 with 9 touchdowns and 1 interceptions.
- Tony Romo is 3-0 with 8 touchdowns and 0 interceptions.
- Cam Newton is 2-4-1 with 8 touchdowns and 4 interceptions.
Guys at home: Home field counts as we witnessed last week when 3 of 4 winners were home teams. Since 2008 home teams in the divisional round have won 75 percent of the games. Manning is 24-3 at home as a Bronco QB with 77 touchdown passes. Aaron Rodgers is 43-11 at home with 126 touchdown passes. Russell Wilson is 24-2 at home with 38 touchdown passes and four rushing scores. Tom Brady is 102-18 with 217 touchdown passes. Simply stated, these four win 85 percent of their home games.
