Titans release Zach Mettenberger after two seasons, 10 starts, zero wins
The sixth-round QB becomes expendable after signing of vet Matt Cassel
The Tennessee Titans brought an end to the Zach Mettenberger era Monday morning by releasing the quarterback.
Drafted in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft, Mettenberger didn't manage to win a single game with the Titans in 10 starts over two years.
The LSU product became expendable in 2015 when Tennessee used the No. 2 overall pick on Marcus Mariota, who very much looked the part of a franchise quarterback during his rookie season in 2015.
Tennessee signed veteran Matt Cassel earlier in the offseason -- it was believed the team wanted to keep both Cassell and Mettenberger, but the reality of talent-thin team carrying three quarterbacks, two of whom just aren't vital to the roster, made Mettenberger a release candidate.
At one point Mettenberger was considered both a potential sleeper to develop under then-coach Ken Whisenhunt -- the tall statue-esque quarterback fits the physical profile of guys who thrived in his system.
But Mettenberger barely completed more than 60 percent of his 345 passing attempts as a Titan, never managed to really put his team in a position where it actually won a game (QB wins get too much attention but Mettenberger wasn't blameless in the team not winning when he started) and managed just 12 touchdowns to 14 interceptions.
He has physical traits that fit the mold of a traditional quarterback, so it wouldn't be surprising to see him land somewhere as a backup.
Whatever happens, we'll always have his mustache. Alright, alright, alright.
