Bowles: Jets don't have QB controversy, Fitzpatrick a game-time call
Fitzpatrick is the starter and Bryce Petty is the backup
Despite Ryan Fitzpatrick's league-high 13 interception and league-low 67.6 passer rating, his job as the Jets' starting quarterback is secure -- so long as his knee injury doesn't prevent him from suiting up Sunday.
According to Jets coach Todd Bowles, the team doesn't have a quarterback controversy. Fitzpatrick is his starter and Bryce Petty remains the backup.
"For me to make a quarterback change, I'd have to have a quarterback controversy," Bowles said, via The New York Post. "Ryan is the starter. Bryce is the backup."
But that doesn't mean Petty won't play against the Rams on Sunday. Fitzpatrick will be a game-time decision due to a knee injury he sustained last week.
Jets C Nick Mangold (ankle) ruled out. QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (knee) was limited, questionable. Game-time decision, per Bowles. #Jets

As far as Bowles' comments, he's right: There isn't much of a quarterback controversy -- at least not when all of his options suck. Fitzpatrick has been in the NFL for more than a decade and has never pieced together a consistent stretch of solid football. Petty has thrown two passes in the NFL. And rookie Christian Hackenberg is still learning how to properly throw a football.
Bowles doesn't have a good option. Still, with the Jets' playoff chances down to basically zero (SportsLine gives them a 2.3 percent chance), riding with Fitzpatrick doesn't really make any sense. He'll turn 34 in a couple weeks. He's not a part of the team's future, but Petty might be. Maybe it's time to see what they have in Petty.
But that doesn't seem to be a possibility, unless Fitzpatrick's injury keeps him off the field. If Fitzpatrick does play, we're looking at a game featuring Fitzpatrick and Case Keenum under center. They've combined for 24 interceptions this season.
