When Jordan Reed sees Gronk do stuff he thinks he can also do that stuff
The strategy worked pretty well for Reed last season
Jordan Reed was one of the best tight ends in football last season. His 87 catches, 952 receiving yards, and 11 touchdowns ranked second, fifth, and second among players at the position, respectively.
Reed wasn't just productive, either; Washington used him in a variety of ways. He lined up in-line as a tight end, split wide as a receiver, and in the slot. If that versatility sounds familiar, it should. It's the same way the Patriots use their star tight end, Rob Gronkowski. And Reed has made a point of emulating him.
Apparently, this is the song that Reed sings in his head every week:
Sometimes I dream / That he is me / You've got to see that's how I dream to be / I dream I move, I dream I groove / Like Gronk / If I could Be Like Gronk / Like Gronk / Oh, if I could Be Like Gronk / Be Like Gronk, Be Like Gronk / Again I try / Just need to fly / For just one day if I could / Be that way / I dream I move / I dream I groove / Like Gronk / If I could Be Like Gronk / I wanna be, I wanna be / Like Gronk / Oh, if I could Be Like Gronk
"Seeing guys like Gronkowski and the things he's been able to do makes me believe I can do those kinds of things too," Reed said, per the Washington Post. "That's the mind-set that I take: 'If someone else can, why can't I, too?'"
Some of his teammates are willing to go a step further. They think he's the best receiving tight end in the league. "In my opinion, he's the best receiving tight end in the league," fellow tight end Niles Paul said on ESPN 980, per the Washington Post. "There's no one who runs routes like J. Reed. Nobody. Nobody. There's barely wide receivers who run routes like J. Reed. That's just my opinion -- and he's always been like that since he first got here."
Paul was joined in that sentiment by offensive lineman Trent Williams. "As I've said before, and said every week, I don't know nobody who can guard that young man," Williams said last December. "I think he's definitely the best receiving tight end in the NFL, hands down."
We're not willing to go out on that limb here, but we'll definitely stipulate that Reed -- when he's healthy enough to be on the field -- is one of the NFL's most dangerous weapons at tight end. The chemistry he developed with Kirk Cousins last season was excellent, and it would go a long way toward helping Washington win the NFC East again if they can build on their 2015 performance to do even bigger and better things in 2016.
