Colin Kaepernick a worthy Start of the Week
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer

Niners quarterback Colin Kaepernick did as he was told Week 4 against Philadelphia, delivering a fine performance as Jamey Eisenberg's Start of the Week (baby).

I include the "baby" because it's what he yells on Sunday afternoons (after "start of the week," of course) whenever his Start of the Week does something notable. It's fairly amusing.

I think it's worth noting, though, that while Kaepernick's Week 4 performance was his best of the season, it wasn't his best by much, at least not in standard leagues. He scored 23 points after earlier outputs of 21 and 20 points.

So in three of his four games, he has scored at least 20 points even though he has contributed multiple touchdowns in only two of them. His rushing ability makes all the difference. Sunday's performance was his third straight with at least 50 yards on the ground. That's basically like another touchdown.

So has Kaepernick achieved must-start status? I don't know if I'd go there yet. I'm always a little skeptical of a quarterback who doesn't do it all with his arm, perhaps for no good reason. But if nothing else, he's looking more consistent than he was last year and like a good bet for Week 5 against Kansas City.

Colin Kaepernick beats Eagles with arm, legs
by Larry Hartstein |

49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick threw for 218 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 58 yards on seven carries (8.3 ypc) in the 26-21 win over the Eagles. Kaepernick completed 17 of 30 throws in leading his team back from a 21-10 deficit.

The second quarter was especially eventful for Kaepernick. First he threw all the way across the field to running back Frank Gore, who turned upfield for a 55-yard touchdown. On the next drive, Kaepernick threw a 53-yard pick-six to safety Malcolm Jenkins.

Kaepernick cut the deficit to 21-20 on a 12-yard scoring strike to Steve Johnson midway through the fourth quarter. Kaepernick made some of his biggest plays on the ground. On 3rd-and-13 in the fourth, Kaepernick darted 16 yards on a designed run.

He's run for at least 54 yards the past three weeks. Kaepernick plays the Chiefs in Week 5.

Colin Kaepernick close to 80 percent completion rate in loss
by Michael Hurcomb |

49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick completed 78.4 percent of his passes Sunday at Arizona, but San Francisco was shutout in the second half and the Cardinals rallied for a 23-14 win. Kaepernick completed 29 of 37 passes for 245 yards and one touchdown, while rushing for a team-high 54 yards on 13 carries.

Kaepernick had a very productive first half, completing 14 of 18 passes for 116 yards. He threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Michael Crabtree on the team's opening drive. Kaepernick had 45 rushing yards by halftime.

He didn't throw an interception or lose a fumble, and he was sacked just once in the loss. The 49ers are back in action Week 4 vs. Philadelphia.

Deemed questionable are cornerback Tramaine Brock (toe), tackle Anthony Davis (hamstring), tight end Vernon Davis (ankle) and tight end Vance McDonald (knee).

Quarterback Colin Kaepernick (back), running back Carlos Hyde (calf), defensive end Justin Smith (not injury related) and tackle Joe Staley (knee) were ruled probable for Sunday.

Colin Kaepernick dealing with back issue
by Chris Cwik |

San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick is dealing with a back issue.

Kaepernick was able to practice in full Thursday, but was listed on the injury report with a back injury. The injury doesn't seem too serious, and Kaepernick should play Week 3.
