Tom Coughlin 'praying' for David Wilson's return to health
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com

Giants coach Tom Coughlin said he won't put David Wilson into full-contact practice until he's certain the speedy running back is 100 percent. Wilson is recovering from neck surgery and has yet to be cleared.

"All in due time with David," Coughlin told the team's website. "Just pray, you're praying that he has a return to excellent health and that the doctors are totally convinced that he is recovered and ready to go. When that time comes, you'll have another contributor who, if he gets a step, he's gone."

Coughlin still counting on David Wilson
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer

Giants coach Tom Coughlin said at the NFL owners meeting that he's counting on running back David Wilson (neck) to contribute this season, but he's not sure in what capacity.

"I'm planning that he's there until they tell me different," Coughlin said. "Now to what extent is he there? Does his presence mean you have to have another number at that spot? All those things are possible."

Wilson had neck surgery in late January after missing 11 games last season. Coughlin said Wilson is "making outstanding progress" in his recovery.

"Whenever I see him I tell him to slow down and stay with what they're telling you that you can and can't do" Coughlin said. "He's been working on his legs for a month or more."

The Giants signed Rashad Jennings as a free agent this offseason, but Coughlin said Wilson will still have a role if healthy.

"Let's get him back. Let's see. I wouldn't rush him into anything," Coughlin said. "Before you ask it, he's a superb kickoff returner. Can he go out there and do that? I don't know. I would be very slow about that."

Giants OC: Pass pro 'first and foremost' for running backs
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com

New Giants offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo said his running backs must be good pass protectors "first and foremost." That might be bad news for David Wilson and impending free agent Andre Brown, who aren't great at blitz pickup.

"You’d like to have a complete back," McAdoo said. "Obviously, it’s ideal to have a guy who’s functional out of the backfield catching the football, but at the end of the day, if they can’t protect the quarterback, they’re going to have a hard time getting on the field."

Giants GM Reese: We will look for a running back
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer

With David Wilson's status optimistic but still not definite to return from major neck surgery and Andre Brown a free agent, Giants general manager told the media in Indianapolis that the team will shop for a new running back.

"Obviously, we can't put all our eggs in that basket," Reese said of Wilson. "We will continue to look for running backs in free agency and the draft as well."

Coughlin hesitant about David Wilson's return
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer

Although ESPN reported earlier this week that running back David Wilson is on track to be ready for the start of training camp, Giants coach Tom Coughlin cautioned that he doesn't know when Wilson will really be ready.

"He's not going to be put out there unless he's ready for that," Coughlin told NFL.com. "He's very pleased with where he's at now. ... Forget about the fact that he could be a difference-maker on our team -- it's the idea that 'Is he going to be healthy enough to withstand (hits)?'"

Wilson recently underwent neck surgery in late January after missing 11 games last season. He has already started weightlifting and working out, so he appears to be headed in the right direction.
