WR Brenton Bersin still in the mix for Panthers
by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer

Wide receiver Brenton Bersin was a pleasant surprise for the Panthers last season, but he will face some tougher competition to stick on the roster this year, per

Berson nabbed 13 of 20 targets for 151 yards and a touchdown last season, but struggled on special teams, where his muffed punt in a playoff loss to the Cardinals was one of the key plays.

This year, the Panthers have upgraded their talent at wide receiver, meaning Bersin could be the odd man out despite a good rapport with QB Cam Newton.

"Every year you've got to make plays if you want to make the team," Bersin said. "I did it last year in camp and in the preseason. I've got to continue it this year."

The Panthers signed wideout Brenton Bersin, an exclusive rights free agent, to a one-year deal, reports the Charlotte Observer. Bersin is a Charlotte native who caught 13 of 20 targets for 151 yards and a touchdown last season.

Per the paper, the team likes Bersin's hands and his route-running, and he's shown a "strong on-field connection" with quarterback Cam Newton.

With Philly Brown sidelined, Stephen Hill might get a shot
by Larry Hartstein |

With undrafted rookie wideout Philly Brown (shoulder) unable to practice for the second straight day Wednesday, the Panthers might promote wideout Stephen Hill from their practice squad for Saturday's divisional playoff game at Seattle, reports Carolina also is looking at third-string quarterback Joe Webb, who has moved back to receiver, the report said.

Brenton Bersin continued to work as the No. 3 receiver in Wednesday's practice. However, he lacks the elite speed Brown brings, the report said. Hill made 45 catches for 594 yards and four touchdowns in two seasons with the Jets.

Carolina is an 11-point underdog.

Panthers receiver Philly Brown, who hurt his shoulder in the Wild Card win over the Cardinals, worked with trainers on the side at practice Tuesday and is progressing, coach Ron Rivera told reporters. If Brown, the team's No. 3 receiver, can't play Saturday against the Seahawks, Brenton Bersin will fill his role.

Carolina is an 11-point road underdog in the divisional playoff game.
