Panthers re-sign WR Brenton Bersin to one-year deal
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com

The Panthers signed wideout Brenton Bersin, an exclusive rights free agent, to a one-year deal, reports the Charlotte Observer. Bersin is a Charlotte native who caught 13 of 20 targets for 151 yards and a touchdown last season.

Per the paper, the team likes Bersin's hands and his route-running, and he's shown a "strong on-field connection" with quarterback Cam Newton.

With Philly Brown sidelined, Stephen Hill might get a shot
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com

With undrafted rookie wideout Philly Brown (shoulder) unable to practice for the second straight day Wednesday, the Panthers might promote wideout Stephen Hill from their practice squad for Saturday's divisional playoff game at Seattle, reports ESPN.com. Carolina also is looking at third-string quarterback Joe Webb, who has moved back to receiver, the report said.

Brenton Bersin continued to work as the No. 3 receiver in Wednesday's practice. However, he lacks the elite speed Brown brings, the report said. Hill made 45 catches for 594 yards and four touchdowns in two seasons with the Jets.

Carolina is an 11-point underdog.

Panthers WR Philly Brown (shoulder) works on the side
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com

Panthers receiver Philly Brown, who hurt his shoulder in the Wild Card win over the Cardinals, worked with trainers on the side at practice Tuesday and is progressing, coach Ron Rivera told reporters. If Brown, the team's No. 3 receiver, can't play Saturday against the Seahawks, Brenton Bersin will fill his role.

Carolina is an 11-point road underdog in the divisional playoff game.

Four Panthers merely pitch in to Sunday triumph
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

Several Panthers made small contributions to a key win Sunday against Cleveland. Among them was running back Mike Tolbert, who rushed for 19 yards on seven carries. Fozzy Whittaker added five yards on his lone carry.

The others did their minor damage through the air. Philly Brown caught two passes for 22 yards while fellow wide receiver Brenton Bersin snagged one for 14 yards.

Many Panthers pitch in with snags to Week 14 victory
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

Seven Panthers caught three passes or less, though that was certainly enough for them to chip in to a blowout defeat of host New Orleans on Sunday.

The most significant made by one of the minor characters was that of running back Fozzy Whittaker, who helped his team pile on with a 26-yard touchdown catch and run late in the third quarter.

Also pitching in from the air were Philly Brown (3-42), Mike Tolbert (2-34), Ed Dickson (1-10), Jerricho Cotchery (1-9) and Brenton Bersin (1-9). Tolbert contributed 28 yards on five carries as well.
