The Chiefs declined to renew Cook's (quadriceps) contract for the 2017 season, Terez A. Paylor of The Kansas City Star reports.
Cook was an exclusive-rights free agent, so the Chiefs could have kept hold of him for cheap if they'd wanted. While it isn't clear if the status of his torn quadriceps from last summer had anything to do with his release, Cook will nonetheless have to prove he is back to full strength to land another gig.
Cook had surgery Thursday to repair a torn quadriceps, Terez Paylor of The Kansas City Star reports.
Cook was waived and placed on the injured reserve due to the injury, but the Chiefs will retain their rights to the young receiver. The 24-year-old suffered the torn quadriceps in Tuesday's practice, and the injury really hurts his chances of making an NFL roster this season.
