"I'm extremely happy with where we are," Palmer said. "We have a long way to go. I couldn't be happier to see the growth from the film we watched this offseason of us playing in games, and to see where we are now and to see the future's bright because you see mistakes made and you see the potential of the scheme, the potential of these plays."
Now, Palmer said he's only focused on "my first progression, my second progression, my third progression."
Tuesday's OTA "was actually enjoyable," Palmer added. "It wasn’t frustrating and all the motions you go through when you’re learning a new offense. I’ve had an entire offseason to study this offense and study our guys in this offense, and it was fun."
With the 120th pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the
Thomas, the sixth quarterback taken in the draft, looked sharp at the Senior Bowl, which helped his draft stock. Standing at 6-foot-6, 248 pounds, Thomas passed for 2,907 yards with 16 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 2013. He also rushed for 344 yards with four touchdowns.
Thomas will likely compete with
Palmer, 34, said if the team drafts a quarterback it would make sense.
"If you are in a position to draft the best player on your board, and that's the best position to be in as an organization, and (a quarterback) is the best player on the board, you are not only making your team better by creating competition but you are helping out the future," Palmer said. "I know I'm not going to play forever. It’s hard for us players to admit that. The older you get the harder it is to admit it. You don't see it happening. You still feel good, you still feel confident, you still feel healthy. But that's the reality. That's the business. It doesn't matter how you feel about it, whether it irks you or you don't care. That’s the game."
Palmer is coming off a solid season in 2013. He threw for a career-high 4,274 yards with 24 touchdowns and 22 interceptions.
Arians said Palmer, 34, still "has more than a couple of years left" playing at a high level.
"I have not seen a drop-off skill wise since the Cincinnati days," Arians said in an interview with CBSSports.com at the NFL owners meeting. "He still throws it as efficiently, and his deep ball is one of the best I've ever seen. He works out like a maniac. His body is in great shape. If anything, I'm expecting a big jump this year because of the second year in the offense. He's got it now. The rest of the guys around him now have got it. We're adding some things with Andre Ellington and some stuff. It's harder to take a vet and school him than to brainwash a rookie. It took a while for that learning process to take place."
Palmer passed for 4,274 yards, 24 touchdowns and 22 interceptions in his first year playing for Arians in 2013.
