Raiders planning run-first attack
by Larry Hartstein |

New Raiders left tackle Donald Penn told Sirius XM NFL Radio that the team will be run-heavy in 2014, seemingly good news for Maurice Jones-Drew and Darren McFadden. "We're gonna run the ball, run the ball, then run it again, until the defense stops us," Penn said.

Oakland averaged 27.3 rushing attempts last year, which ranked 16th.

MJD contemplated retirement this offseason
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer

Before signing with the Raiders this offseason, running back Maurice Jones-Drew thought about retiring, he told the Los Angeles Times

"I just didn't feel like I had it anymore," Jones-Drew told reporter Sam Farmer. "But that wasn't the case. My trainer helped me get back in shape and gain that foundation that I'd lost with the surgery."

Jones-Drew suffered a Lisfranc foot injury in 2012 which limited him some in 2013. He says he still has the drive to play football.

"I watched the same tape and I'd say, 'Man, why'd I do this? Why didn't I do that?'" he said. "Part of it was, just physically, I wasn't able to do some of the same things I'm used to doing. But once I started working out after the season ... I'm in the best shape of my life now, running fast, running hills, pulling sleds, cutting, jumping. I've rededicated myself to my craft again."

Jones-Drew will compete for the starter's role and work alongside running back Darren McFadden in camp this summer.

Raiders noticing their RBs' burst, explosiveness
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer

Expectations might not be high for the Raiders' pair of older running backs coming off of injuries, but so far through minicamp both Maurice Jones-Drew and Darren McFadden have passed the eyeball test of their peers, says the Contra Costa Times

Quarterback Matt Schaub has seen them showing good burst and making explosive plays as a receiver, believing that the way they complement each other "is going to be a key to our success."

Head coach Dennis Allen agrees.

"When you watch 'em practice, you see guys that still have explosion, guys that still have run skills, guys that still make people miss," Allen said. "I don't pay a lot of attention to what the statistics may say. I just see what I see with my eyes, and I see a couple of guys that if they can stay healthy, have the ability to perform at a high level."

That is a big "if" from Allen -- McFadden hasn't been able to stay healthy throughout his career and Jones-Drew is a year and change removed from a Lisfranc foot injury.

Maurice Jones-Drew wants to compete for starting job
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer

New Raiders running back Maurice Jones-Drew told the media on Tuesday that he knows he'll have to compete to start with Darren McFadden. He says he's motivated to prove he can still run the ball effectively and will work hard to earn the starting role.

One reason why he thinks he'll get that role? Because his foot feels "phenomenal."

"I am getting my strength back and my body has really responded," he told the San Francisco Chronicle. "My goal last year was to show people I was healthy again and finish the season strong. My goal this year is to be explosive again."

Jones-Drew also said he's down to 215 pounds with a goal of getting to 208 by training camp.

Maurice Jones-Drew won't be handed starting job
by Larry Hartstein |

Running back Maurice Jones-Drew, who signed a three-year contract with the Raiders, said he was told by the team he's coming in to compete for playing time, reports

"We have different running abilities," Jones-Drew told reporters, referring to Darren McFadden. "But the competition is what's going to make us better. We'll push each other."

The Raiders are high on second-year back Latavius Murray, who missed last season with an ankle injury, the report said.
