Nelson will face the Steelers Week 16 for the first time since his performance in the Super Bowl a few years ago, looking for another big game against the AFC North opponent. Through 14 games against the Steelers, wide receivers average 156.4 receiving yards and 20.1 Fantasy points per week, which is the 10th-lowest average. Wide receivers have totaled 12 touchdowns, with nine coming in the last seven games.
For the most part, No. 1 receivers haven't done overly well against the Steelers. Greg Jennings, Calvin Johnson and Josh Gordon have all totaled more than 20 Fantasy points, and Torrey Smith had 15 Fantasy points, but otherwise No. 1 receivers have had relatively quiet performances.
Also, it appears Matt Flynn will be back under center Week 16 and Nelson hasn't had great numbers in Flynn's first three starts. Nelson did total 12 Fantasy points last week, so Fantasy owners hope he can at least have similar success this week. Consider Nelson a No. 2 Fantasy wide receiver Week 16.
Nelson finally broke the six-game drought on a 13-yard pass from Matt Flynn to open the scoring in the third quarter and launch a dramatic comeback that resulted in a 37-36 victory.
Not bad considering he had a miserable first half. Nelson dropped a pass, was called for interference, and was blanked until the second quarter. He had just two catches for 23 yards before intermission, then added three receptions for 38 yards in the second half.
Nelson and his Packers now await the arrival of the Steelers in Week 16.
In one statistical area,
Nelson has 28 catches for 397 yards in six games since Rodgers went down with a broken collarbone. He had 39 receptions for 649 yards in seven games previous - not a huge difference. But Nelson scored seven touchdowns with Rodgers under center and none since.
If he can't find the end zone Sunday in Dallas, he might not the rest of the year. The Cowboys own perhaps the worst pass defense in the NFL. They rank dead last in yards yielded through the air (3,880) and 31st in passing touchdowns surrendered (26).
Nelson remains a strong No. 2 or flex option in all leagues. And his Week 15 competition makes him a particularly favorable play, which should bring a smile to the faces of Fantasy owners trying to earn finals berths.
His four targets were tied for fourth-most on the team, but he made the most of what he got, his biggest contribution coming on a 46-yard bomb early in the fourth quarter. The 85 yards were the second-most he's had in six games, beginning with the one where starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers broke his collarbone in Week 9. Nelson had just two catches for 14 yards working with Flynn last week.
With Rodgers returning to practice Thursday, Nelson may have a chance to take another step forward Week 15 at Dallas.
