After players reported to Green Bay and those injured underwent initial examinations, Nelson won't be on the field Tuesday for the first practice of training camp. The decision doesn't come as a surprise, as he only recently reached 11 months since sustaining a torn ACL last preseason. Once the Packers deem his right knee ready for increased activity, his activation from the PUP list won't be far behind.
Nelson (knee) won't participate in 11-on-11 activities until training camp, even though he said he would be able to play in a game if the Packers had one this weekend, Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com reports.
Nelson has participated throughout the Packers' offseason program, even catching passes from Aaron Rodgers on Thursday. The 31-year-old wideout might be a bit optimistic in his self-assessment, but it doesn't actually matter if he's game-ready, as Week 1 is still more than three months away. Given that he tore his ACL in August, it will come as no surprise if Nelson has a perfectly normal training camp. The Packers have improved depth in the receiving corps, after relying heavily on Nelson and Randall Cobb in 2014, and then turning to a slew of unreliable options for much of last season. Davante Adams, Jeff Janis, Ty Montgomery (ankle) and Jared Abbrederis will compete for roles behind Nelson and Cobb, with Richard Rodgers and Jared Cook duking things out at tight end. Furthermore, the team has a pair of capable pass-catching backs in Eddie Lacy and James Starks, though neither is particularly adept at getting open.
Nelson is doing individual work - running routes and catching passes - though presumably not at full speed. Having suffered his torn ACL last preseason, he may be ready for full participation at some point in camp. First, he'll need to prove that he can make sharp cuts while running at full speed. Nelson remains on track for Week 1.
Nelson characteristically didn't make any proclamations on when he'll be 100 percent, but it's telling that he reported no "mental blocks" or worries about losing a step after going through Monday's workout. Following the torn ACL suffered last preseason, all indications suggest that he's been recovering with great progress, shedding positive light on his outlook ahead of Week 1. Nonetheless, Nelson's involvement will have to be monitored throughout the build-up to this season, and onlookers should expect the Packers to take every precaution necessary with their star wideout.
Jordy Nelson (knee) expects to receive clearance to run pass routes in the next two weeks, ESPN.com reports. On Thursday, the wide receiver said, "I'm 100 percent of what the doctor will let me do. The rest is unknown, but we're right where we want to be and will continue to progress once we get back to Green Bay in a week and a half."
Led by head coach Mike McCarthy, the Green Bay Packers have been optimistic with the state of Nelson's recovery from a torn ACL in his right knee, which has so far been able to handle "agility stuff and running." If he's able to partake in route running in the near future, Nelson could fit in far more of the offseason program than one would have expected when he sustained the injury in Pittsburgh on Aug. 23. In reality, though, Green Bay's medical and training staffs will likely exercise caution to ensure he reaches the regular season intact.
