Bills' Brandon Tate: Takes over return duties
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Tate took all five kickoff returns for an average of 25 yards and the lone punt return (eight yards) in Buffalo's Week 2 loss to the Jets.

Tate was signed after being cut by the Bengals just before the start of the season and has immediately become the Bills' main return man, quickly passing Reggie Bush, who surprisingly has had almost no role on offense or special teams through the first two games. Tate looked good against the Jets, so expect this role to continue for the foreseeable future even though he remains last on the depth chart at receiver. It's also worth noting that Tate could be active in the kick-return game for the next two weeks with high-powered Arizona and New England on tap.

Brandon Tate: Signs with Buffalo
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Tate signed with Buffalo on Tuesday.

Tate was released by the Bengals last Tuesday, following a five-year stint as the team's primary return man. Despite catching just 33 passes in that span, Tate might eventually have a chance to push for the No. 3 or 4 spot on a Buffalo depth chart that's thin at wide receiver. However, the Bills probably signed Tate for special teams reasons, perhaps suggesting that the team doesn't want to use Reggie Bush as its primary return man for both punts and kickoffs. While not lacking for experience, the 28-year-old Tate hasn't been particularly explosive in recent seasons, with his last return touchdown occurring all the way back in 2011.

Brandon Tate: Waived by Cincinnati
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Tate was cut by the Bengals on Tuesday, according to Paul Dehner of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Undrafted rookie Alex Erickson stood out for his work in the return game this preseason, making the 28-year-old Tate expendable. Tate returned at least 18 punts and 18 kickoffs in each of his five seasons with the Bengals, but he hasn't brought one back for a touchdown since 2011. He had just 33 receptions in that span, including two in 2015. The Bengals did Tate a slight favor by releasing him early and giving him time to catch on elsewhere as a potential return specialist.

Bengals' Brandon Tate: Could lose job to undrafted rookie
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Tate is in danger of losing his job to undrafted rookie Alex Erickson, according to Paul Dehner of the Cincinnati Enquirer

The Bengals' top punt and kick returner for much of the past five years, Tate caught just 33 passes in 64 games over that span, mostly serving as the fourth or fifth option at wide receiver. Tate hasn't scored on a return since 2011, and rookie Alex Erickson has four punt returns for 167 yards and a touchdown this preseason. If the decision is close, Cincinnati would save a bit of cap room by keeping Erickson over Tate. It's also possible both stick on the team, which would be bad news for James Wright, Cody Cole and Mario Alford (ankle).

Bengals' Brandon Tate: Doesn't get start
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Tyler Boyd got the start over Tate in Thursday's preseason game against the Lions, according to Paul Dehner of the Cincinnati Enquirer

Tate was expected to fill in for Brandon LaFell (hand), but the Bengals instead started rookie Tyler Boyd, who responded with a 2-38-1 receiving line on three targets, compared to Tate's 2-23-0 (also three targets). Even if LaFell isn't ready for Week 1, which the Bengals hope he will be, Tate probably won't start the season any higher than third on the depth chart.
