Jamaal Charles appears to be ahead of schedule in the rehabilitation process from a torn ACL in October, the Kansas City Star reports. "That's more of a medical assessment," general manager John Dorsey said. "If they say he's ahead of schedule, then I believe he's ahead of schedule, which is a positive for this organization."
While Dorsey didn't specify whether or not he believed Charles would be ready training camp, the fact that he's ahead of schedule in his recovery certainly bodes well for his chances. The star running back's status should be further updated as the season approaches, but Charles should be set to retake his workhorse role for the Kansas City Chiefs again in 2016 when healthy. The emergence of Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware behind him also provides the team with depth to rest the veteran Charles should they choose to turn to more of a rotation out of the backfield.
De'Anthony Thomas finished Sunday with just one carry for one yard, failing to haul in his only target of the day.
A report surfaced earlier in the week that Thomas could see some playing time in the backfield following the injury to Jamaal Charles, but his one carry Sunday tells a different story. Charcandrick West and Knile Davis should benefit the most from Charles' injury, while Thomas could see the occasional few carries and should continue serving in the role he's had this season.
The Kansas City Chiefs ' posted depth chart, which no longer includes Jamaal Charles, still lists Knile Davis ahead of Charcandrick West.
Mind you, this past Sunday against the Bears, West finished the day with 31 yards on seven carries, while Davis carried the ball just twice for two yards. Still, as the Chiefs move on without Charles, who is now on IR, a committee approach utilizing both Davis and West figures to be the team's strategy going forward, beginning Sunday against the Vikings, according to NFL.com. At 5-foot-10, 227 pounds, Davis -- who has had some success filling in for Charles in the past -- is a "good one to go downhill with," per coach Andy Reid. Meanwhile, Reid notes that the 5-foot-10, 205-pound West and Charles are "closer together (skill set-wise) than what Knile is as far as the quick moves." The bottom line here is that the Chiefs could well elect to employ Davis and West as a one-two backfield punch in the absence of Charles, which enhances the fantasy upside of both backs, though it may take a game or two until a tangible pecking order is established on that front.
Jamaal Charles (knee) was placed on injured reserve Tuesday, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
With Charles suffering a torn ACL on Sunday, the Kansas City backfield will be left to Charcandrick West and Knile Davis. Charles tore his other ACL in Week 2 of the 2011 season, and he bounced back the next year to put up 1,745 scrimmage yards in a full 16 games. He'll be a 29-year-old running back coming off a second torn ACL, but even by NFL standards, he has uncommon athleticism.
An MRI has reportedly confirmed that Jamaal Charles tore his ACL on Sunday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.
With Charles thus on track to miss the rest of the season, Charcandrick West and Knile Davis are next up for the Kansas City Chiefs ' backfield duties. With that in mind, coach Andy Reid relayed via the Kansas City Star that the duo would continue to split time, though it's worth noting that on Sunday, West finished the day with 31 yards on seven carries, while Davis carried the ball just twice for two yards. "I'm not saying who is or is not the feature guy, but we need both of them," Reid stated Sunday, with reference to turning to a West/Davis backfield combo. "Both their games are different. We'll just see how that goes. You saw both of them played today, so we'll got back to the drawing board on that and get it right." While the situation plays out, both West and Davis slot in as high-priority targets in leagues where they remain available, with West perhaps the higher percentage play, based on Week 5's box score, but not necessarily a lock to dominate the team's carries moving forward, given Davis' previous experience filling in for Charles.
