Saints expect Jairus Byrd back 'sooner than later'
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer

Saints coach Sean Payton expects safety Jairus Byrd (back) to rejoin the team "sooner than later" but still put him on the PUP list to begin training camp.

"Clearly, before we leave here he'll be back on the roster," Payton told the media Friday.

Jairus Byrd on schedule, should be in camp on-time

Saints safety Jairus Byrd is expected to be ready for the start of training camp this week, a source tells ESPN. Byrd is rehabbing from offseason back surgery and could be limited at first. There's even a chance the Saints take a cautious approach with him and give him plenty of time to recover before the start of the season.

After signing a six-year, $54 million deal with the Saints this offseason, Byrd missed all of his new team's OTAs and minicamps. The team thought it was best for Byrd's long-term health to get the "minor surgery" done and over with so it wouldn't impact him this season.

Saints free-agent acquisition Jairus Byrd underwent back surgery last week and is not participating in OTAs, reports the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Coach Sean Payton said he expects Byrd, a ball-hawking safety, to be ready for training camp.

The Saints signed safety Jairus Byrd to a six-year, $54 million contract. Now they expect him to force turnovers like he did with the Bills. In five seasons, Byrd had 22 interceptions and 11 forced fumbles.

"Every season you guys hear us say, 'Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers.' So you really begin to value those guys," coach Sean Payton said, per "The ball finds them. [Byrd] is one of those players that seems to be around the ball a lot."

Saints lock up Jairus Byrd long term

Though they have little room under the cap, the Saints somehow managed to find room for one of the best free agent defenders available. A few hours after free agency opened Tuesday, the team announced the signing of safety Jairus Byrd, the financial terms of which are not yet known.

Byrd has made the Pro Bowl three times in his five-year career, and is coming off a four-interception, 48-tackle season despite playing just 11 games for the Bills last season.
