  • Panthers' Roberto Luongo: Eliminated despite 49 saves Sunday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/24/16) Luongo denied 49 of 51 shots in Sunday's season-ending Game 6 loss to the Islanders.

An absolutely brutal break for Luongo, as he once again gave it everything he had -- and then some -- before falling short in double overtime for the second straight game. To make matters worse, he was less than a minute away from notching a shutout but ended up allowing the game-tying goal with just 54 seconds left after losing track of the puck. The 37-year-old wraps up his playoff run with a 2.05 GAA and .934 save percentage following one of his best regular seasons of recent vintage.

Panthers' Roberto Luongo: Starting Game 6

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/24/16) Luongo will patrol the crease in Sunday's Game 6 matchup with the Islanders, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.

Despite a tremendous effort in Game 5, setting aside 40 of the 42 shots he faced, Luongo was slapped with the loss after allowing a double-overtime goal to the Isles' Alan Quine. The veteran will look to stave of elimination in Sunday's Game 6, but will have to hold his own on the road at the Barclay's Center in order to do so. However, Luongo and the Panthers did take a game on the road earlier this season, so don't count them out yet.

Panthers' Roberto Luongo: Spectacular effort fruitless in Game 5

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/22/16) Luongo stood on his head while facing the Islanders for Game 5 on Friday night. He turned away 40 of 42 shots but still lost in double-overtime, 2-1.

Frans Nielsen put the puck past Luongo early in the first period but it was smooth sailing for the veteran backstop all the way through the first overtime. As fate would have it, Panthers forward Derek MacKenzie drew a slashing penalty that preceded an Alan Quine game-winner in double-overtime. Ninety shots were fired in this thrilling contest, with both Luongo and winner Thomas Greiss doing outstanding work between the posts. This game truly could've gone either way, but now Luongo finds himself in a tough spot, needing to win Game 6 on Sunday to avoid elimination from the playoffs.

Panthers' Roberto Luongo: Protecting net Friday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/22/16) Luongo will get the start in goal in Friday's Game 5 against the Islanders, Newsday's Arthur Staple reports.

Luongo was fantastic in Wednesday's Game 4, stopping 26 of 27 shots en route to a 2-1 victory. The 37-year-old netminder will look to pick up his third win of the 2015-16 postseason Friday in another tough home matchup with a dangerous Islanders club that has racked up 11 goals through the first four games of the series despite only potting a single goal in Game 2 and Game 4.

Panthers' Roberto Luongo: Evens series with 26 saves Wednesday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/20/16) Luongo turned aside 26 of 27 shots in Wednesday's 2-1 win over the Islanders in Game 4.

Down 2-1 in the series on the road, Luongo clutched up in this one, thwarting all but one of the Isles' shots in what was an exciting affair in Brooklyn. Despite a somewhat bloated 2.62 GAA in his first four playoff games, Bobby Lu has allowed 11 goals on 134 shots for a .918 save percentage, which is right in line with his mark of .922 in the regular season. Look for the former Canuck to further tighten things up when the teams take the ice in a pivotal Game 5 on Friday in Sunrise.

Luongo made 19 saves in a 4-0 loss to the Lightning on Saturday night. The Panthers face the Habs, Bruins and Devils before season's end, but their playoff hopes have been all but dashed. April 3, 2015: Luongo, Panthers Cruise By Carolina
Luongo gave up just one goal on 32 shots Thursday in a 6-1 rout of the Hurricanes. This was a crucial win for the Panthers as they try desperately to fight their way into the playoffs, but they're just barely staving off elimination at this point and need to leapfrog two hot, talented teams in Boston and Ottawa. So it's probably not happening for them this year, but Luongo's got to like the potential he sees in front of him, as the Panthers' skaters have come a long way and offer much promise for the future.
