It was a fairly quiet day in the pool on Wednesday, but the United States still found its way onto the gold medal stand. Katie Ledecky put the team on her back and helped bring home the 4x200-meter freestyle gold. Tomorrow, we will get to see the showdown between legends in Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte after both qualified first and second in the 200-meter individual medley.

Here are the biggest takeaways from Wednesday.

Ledecky is not a human

Katie Ledecky could really be tested for mermaid blood because this is getting ridiculous. The 19-year-old swimmer continues to amaze us all with her abilities in the water. Team USA was down 0.89 seconds on the 4x200-meter freestyle relay before Ledecky hit the water.

They won by 1.89 seconds.

Unreal.

We talk about Phelps as the greatest Olympian of all time with 21 gold medals (as of now). We may be talking about Ledecky in the same respect 8-12 years from now if she is able to keep this up.

A final showdown?

Speaking of the legend, Michael Phelps look pretty good yet again on Wednesday, breezing through his semifinal 200-meter individual medley race. He took the top spot and will be in lane 4 on Thursday, right next to teammate and rival Ryan Lochte in lane 5. The two have battled since the 2004 Summer Games in Athens and both looked primed for another fun performance.

"I love racing him. For me, he brings the best out of me," Phelps said after their semifinal race.

"We bring the best out of each other. We've been doing it since 2004," Lochte said. "Any time I get up and race him, it's the best."

The 200-meter individual medley has been won by one of these two men for the last 13 years. It'll be Lochte's final race this Olympics and maybe ever. We'll see if Thursday makes it 14.

USA top heavy?

While it is fun to celebrate how well the American swimmers are doing so far, we still haven't seen another American really step up and take the reins. Phelps and Ledecky have totaled seven medals so far in Rio (six gold and one silver) while the American swimmers as a whole have 21 medals including eight gold.

On Wednesday, Nathan Adrian was expected to win another gold in the 100-freestyle. He finished with a bronze.

Josh Prenot was close in the breaststroke, but fell to a surprise lane 8 victor from Kazakhstan.

The Americans are doing well on the whole, but they are going to need somebody not named Ledecky or Phelps to step up and win a gold.
