Rio Olympics 2016: Now there's a fire derailing mountain bike events
Add this to the list of things that have gone wrong in Rio
I'm not about to say the Rio Olympics have been bad. After all, the 2016 games have offered high quality drama, especially in soccer, track and field, and swimming.
But after finding out the river in Guanabara Bay is partially made up of literal trash... and that water in pools turns green... and that it's possible to be robbed at gunpoint even if you're an athlete... it now seems you can't even mountain bike without being pursued by a wall of fire.
According to news sources, a wild brush fire has taken over the Deodoro parkland in the western part of Rio de Janeiro. The significance here is the area houses the mountain bike and BMX tracks, as well as the canoe slalom. Mountain bikers were reportedly evacuated from the area.
Additionally, the Associated Press reports that "Ash from a wildfire roughly 10 miles from the Olympic field hockey venue littered the playing surface before the evening session of the women's quarterfinals.
The list of problems goes on. Earlier, seven people were injured when a spidercam fell more than 60 feet to the ground. The good news is that all seven people injured have been released from care alreadyl.
