Argentina erects Messi statue as nation tries to convince him not to quit
A statue might not be enough, but it's a start
Lionel Messi's time appears to be done with the Argentina national team after he quit following the Copa America final defeat to Chile on Sunday night. It was the third straight summer with heartbreak in the final for Argentina and Messi and the fourth overall final he has lost with the team.
With that, Argentina's title drought continued from 1993, and it seemed like too much for Messi to take, opting to just play club soccer.
But as expected, there's strong support all over the world for one of the best players of all time to continue playing on the international scene, especially in his home nation. The capital city of Buenos Aires unveiled a statue of Messi as part of its "Don't Go" campaign.
Buenos Aires mayor Horacio Rodriguez showed off the statue on Tuesday as Argentina soccer is in shambles, with Messi's retirement, the soccer federation feeling the heat over corruption and more.
Here's a look at the bronze statue.
The mayor has pleaded with Messi to stay with the national team as it looks ahead to the 2018 World Cup. It rests on the Glory Trail on the shores of the city's Rio de la Plata.
Whether that is enough to bring him back in the end remains to be seen.
