Barcelona contract negotiations with Lionel Messi reportedly hit a roadblock
The two sides hope to get the deal done, but it may be delayed
Barcelona's contract negotiations with star Lionel Messi have stalled. According to Marca, talks have hit a wall despite Barcelona planning to renew his deal by March.
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner is currently on vacation back home in Argentina for the holidays.
The report says there has been no official meeting between the player and the club to address the situation, with Messi's deal set to expire in June 2018.
There is still plenty of time to come to terms on a deal. The team resigned Luis Suarez recently and has Neymar under contract until 2021. There really doesn't seem to be any doubt that a deal will get done, but the longer it takes, the more it fuels the speculation of Messi possibly leaving.
There have been some rumbles about Messi possibly leaving Spain after the 2018 World Cup to return to boyhood club Newell's. But for right now, the belief is Messi will sign an extension and stay behind the '18 WC.
