La Liga president Javier Tebas has acknowledged that an investigation into match-fixing is underway after Barcelona B beat Eldense 12-0 on Saturday, according to Cadena Cope.

Here’s what to know about the scandal that’s hit Spanish soccer.

What happened?

So Barca’s B team, filled with some seriously talented youngsters, led Eldense 8-0 at the half. There are claims that players on Eldense threw the match.

Even a player from Eldense said there was match-fixing. Cheikh Saad said that four players were involved, according to Sport.

“There are four players involved in match fixing. I don’t care what happens, but when I can, I will give the names of these players,” he said.

“Half an hour before playing the game against Barcelona B I was starting, but then I was out of the lineup. They told a teammate this game was fixed and if he wanted to play he should not score goals. They didn’t ask me as they knew what my answer would be. The coach knew something, I’m sure, and the players too.

What is Barcelona B?

Barcelona B is just that, Barcelona’s B team, which Lionel Messi played for in 2004-05 before joining the Barca senior team. The club competes in Segunda Division B, the third tier of Spanish soccer.

Here’s what the Eldense club president had to say about it:

“We are going to look into it because the Eldense board have asked us to and the result at half time was out of the ordinary,” Tebas said. “We’re going to investigate because there are certain collateral issues with an Italian investment group that bear the hallmarks of the possible involvement of an international betting ring with a view to match-fixing.”

So, there’s that. An Italian investment group involved with Eldense could possibly be involved in match-fixing. Not a good sign when the president comes out and says it.

What’s next?

With the investigation underway, it is unclear what exactly is next. Now, as to what could happen, it depends what is found. Eldense is already relegated but could possibly be moved down another division, penalized points and/or fined if match-fixing is found. This could be a crippling blow to the club they may never recover from.
