Retired USWNT soccer star Abby Wambach, who was arrested for driving under the influence of intoxicants (DUII) back in April, revealed in her memoir that her arrest ended a tough and long spell in her life where she abused alcohol and prescription drugs regularly.

"I was stubborn and I was in denial," she told the Associated Press. "I didn't want to face the truth."

Her upcoming memoir "Forward," set for a Tuesday release, details her consumption of vodka and pills. Some of the pills include Ambien, Vicodin and Adderall.

"That night getting arrested was one of the best things that has ever happened to me," she said. "Because if I don't get so publicly shamed and publicly humiliated, I don't think I wake up."

Wambach won the World Cup with the USWNT in 2015 and is the all-time leading international goal scorer in soccer history -- men or women -- with 184 strikes. Her more recent appearance in news was the arrest, which happened not even a year after lifting the World Cup trophy.

Wambach says she as been sober since her arrest.
