The 2017 Confederations Cup begins on Saturday morning when host Russia welcomes New Zealand to Saint Petersburg Stadium. A pre-World Cup test run, the competition features eight teams from around the world in a competitive two-week international cup a year before the World Cup.

Player to watch

Russia captain Igor Akinfeev. The veteran goalkeeper has 98 caps for his nation and is a quality goalkeeper. Playing for CSKA Moscow, he likely won't have a lot to do in the opener but he will be forced to make a couple big saves, and we'll see if he can come up big to help the hosts get a result in the opener.
