Remember this summer when former USWNT goalkeeper Hope Solo decided to call Sweden cowards after the Europeans eliminated the Americans in the Olympics?

Well now Solo, who was fired from the national team, has explained what she meant...on a Swedish TV talk show.

Take a look:

"If anyone actually listened to the interview, and I'm not sure if you have, but, it was very, I wasn't enraged, I wasn't emotional, I wasn't angry. I just had this conversation with the journalists in the room about the game," Solo said. "We were talking about the style of play... I didn't mean to come across that the players were cowards or the coach was a coward. I meant the style of play wasn't very Olympic-spirited."

She went on to complain about Sweden star Lotta Schelin playing so defensively in the match, which Sweden won on penalty kicks, resulting in the shocking elimination of the U.S.

"I wanted her to attack me," Solo said.

Well, those remarks still don't help. The damage is done. This just looks like an attempt to save face. But at this point, there is little saving that can be done. For years Solo has been the "bad girl" on the national team, from run-ins with the law to feuds. No act of kindness, apology or explanation looks like enough to turn things around.
