Purdue vs. Penn State score: Boilermakers hold off late Nittany Lions charge to win Big Ten Tournament title
Penn State stormed back late in the second half, but Purdue was able to hold off the rally to win the conference crown
Purdue won its first conference tournament title since 2009 and just its second in program history as the Boilermakers defeated Penn State 67-65 in the Big Ten Tournament championship game. Penn State rallied from a 17-point deficit in the final six minutes to draw within two points in the final seconds, but guard Cam Wynter was called for a traveling violation before the Nittany Lions could attempt a potential game-winning 3-pointer.
The victory brings another trophy for the Boilermakers, who also won the Big Ten's regular season title behind the play of Zach Edey, who was named the league's player of the year. Edey led Purdue again Sunday with 30 points and 13 rebounds as the Boilermakers rebuffed a series of surges from the Nittany Lions, who entered with wins in eight of their last nine games.
Penn State entered the Big Ten Tournament as an NCAA Tournament bubble team but played its way onto the right side of the bubble in Jerry Palm's Bracketology by beating Illinois, Northwestern and Indiana to reach the title game.
Ultimately, the matchup with Edey proved too much for an undersized PSU squad, which is now 0-3 against Purdue this season. The Boilermakers entered the Big Ten Tournament just 4-4 over their previous eight games but returned to form with wins over Rutgers and Ohio State leading into Sunday's final.
Now 29-5 and with a leading National Player of the Year candidate in Edey, Purdue will be among the favorites to win the national title as it enters the NCAA Tournament after winning its conference tournament.
