Live scores, highlights and updates from the Georgia Southern vs. Coastal Carolina football game
Game Recap
The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers won the last time they met up with the Georgia Southern Eagles, and they shouldn't regret having come to the reunion, either. Coastal Carolina captured a comfortable 28-8 win on Saturday.
After a totally unproductive first quarter, the Coastal Carolina offense stepped up its game and put 21 points on the board in the second quarter. Georgia Southern wasn't quite able to keep up, and the score was 21 to nothing heading into the break. The Chanticleers coasted a bit in the second half, relying primarily on their first half lead, but they still walked away with the victory.
RB Shermari Jones and QB Bryce Carpenter were among the main playmakers for Coastal Carolina as the former punched in one rushing touchdown and the latter passed for one TD and 85 yards on 20 attempts in addition to rushing for one TD and 44 yards. Another playmaker for Coastal Carolina was LB Mason Shelton, who returned a punt 25 yards to the end zone in the second quarter.
Coastal Carolina's defense was a presence as well, as it got past the Eagles' offensive line to sack the quarterback four times for a total loss of 25 yards. In fact, those sacks all came courtesy of defensive juggernaut DT Josaiah Stewart. Stewart now has 9.5 sacks through nine games.
No one had a standout game offensively for Georgia Southern, but TE Beau Johnson led the way with one touchdown.
The win improved the Chanticleers' record to 8-1. The Eagles' loss pushed them down to 2-7.
Coastal Carolina will look to defend their home turf next Saturday against the Georgia State Panthers at 2 p.m. ET. Georgia State took a loss in their last game and are no doubt out to reverse Coastal Carolina's good fortune. As for Georgia Southern, they will face off against the Texas State Bobcats at 3 p.m. ET next Saturday at Jim Wacker Field at Bobcat Stadium.
