Live scores, highlights and updates from the Texas vs. Kansas football game
Game Recap
In almost any game, 56 points would all but guarantee a win. Not in this one. On Saturday, the Texas Longhorns lost 57-56 to the Kansas Jayhawks. What made the defeat an especially bitter pill for Texas to swallow was that they had been favored by 31 points coming into the contest.
RB Devin Neal went supernova for Kansas as he rushed for three TDs and 143 yards on 24 carries in addition to snatching one receiving TD. Neal's longest run was for 58 yards in the third quarter. Neal's sharp performance set his single-game rushing touchdown high for the season. Kansas' WR Lawrence Arnold got in on the action, too, converting a pick in the second quarter into a touchdown.
The Jayhawks' defense was a presence as well, as it collected two interceptions and two fumbles. The picks came courtesy of Arnold and S O.J. Burroughs.
QB Casey Thompson hadn't helped Texas' cause all that much against the Iowa State Cyclones last week, but the same can't be said for this matchup. The losing side was boosted by Thompson, who passed for six TDs and 358 yards on 43 attempts in addition to punching in one rushing touchdown.
Texas has fallen quite a ways from their 7-3 record from last season and are now 4-6. The win improved Kansas' record to 2-8.
The Longhorns will square off against the West Virginia Mountaineers at noon ET next Saturday at Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium. Like Texas, West Virginia is looking to wash their mouths of the taste of defeat after falling 34-17 to the Kansas State Wildcats. Kansas is on the road again next Saturday and plays against the TCU Horned Frogs at 4 p.m. ET Nov. 20 at Amon G. Carter Stadium. TCU took a loss in their last game and are no doubt out to reverse Kansas' good fortune.
