Texas vs. Wyoming score: No. 4 Longhorns storm past Cowboys in fourth quarter to avoid letdown
Texas was flirting with disaster one week after a program-defining win on the road at Alabama
No. 4 Texas outlasted Wyoming for a 31-10 victory in Austin, Texas. The Longhorns started slow and entered the fourth quarter tied 10-10, but scored 21 unanswered to pull away for their first 3-0 start since 2012.
Wyoming threw the first punch as running back Harrison Waylee broke off a 62-yard rushing touchdown on the fifth play of the game. After last week's impressive performance against Alabama, the Longhorns struggled to get anything going in the first half. Only one of the team's first five drives lasted more than five plays as quarterback Quinn Ewers was held to just 57 yards passing at halftime.
However, Texas flipped the switch as the fourth quarter got underway. Wide receiver Xavier Worthy took a Ewers pass 44 yards for a go-ahead touchdown. One drive later, running back Jonathon Brooks broke off a 61-yard rush to set up a 5-yard scoring run from Ewers. Two plays after that safety Jerrin Thopmson iced the game when he picked off Wyoming quarterback Evan Svoboda and took it back to stretch the lead to three scores.
The Longhorns came into the game ranked inside the top five in the AP poll for the first time since the 2010 BCS National Championship Game. While the Longhorns may not have impressed voters much with a lethargic performance, the win keeps them in the thick of the national title race.
Brooks turned in a stellar performance, rushing for a career-high 164 yards to keep the Longhorns offence on schedule. Ewers added just 131 yards passing on 11-of-21, but threw a pair of touchdowns and rushed for another to pull away for the victory. Svoboda passed for 136 yards in his first game off the bench for Wyoming and Waylee added 110 yards rushing.
Texas puts game to sleep
4Q: Texas 31, Wyoming 10
After Wyoming tied the game to end the third quarter, Texas has caught fire. The Longhorns scored 21 unanswered points after a pick-six from Jerrin Thompson broke the game open. After three lackluster quarters, the Longhorns have turned things on and are playing far more aggressively on both sides of the ball.
Texas 24, Wyoming 10
Running back Jonathan Brooks broke off a 61-yard run to flip the game on its head. Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers converted three plays later with a 5-yard touchdown run and Texas has scored 14 unanswered in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter. Wyoming has its work cut out trying to score quickly.
Defense stepping up
Texas put together perhaps its best defensive drive of the day, pressuring Evan Svoboda and forcing a tackle for loss against Harrison Waylee. The Longhorns have a chance to go up multiple scores.
