For a while there, it looked like Trea Turner was becoming the consensus top pick, at least in Rotisserie leagues, which felt like a surrender to safety given some of the generation-defining talents who have emerged the past couple years.

Fernando Tatis, in spite of his shoulder concerns, is more befitting of that top honor, as would be the actual No. 1 player in Rotisserie last year, Vladimir Guerrero. Turner going fourth here seems more appropriate. He's not the stolen base outlier he used to be, after all, and doesn't quite measure up to the other first-rounders in terms of power.

Order aside, the actual players going in the first round are pretty much locked in by now, at least in this scoring format. Maybe you'd swap in Kyle Tucker for Ronald Acuna, who likely won't be ready for the start of the season, but I myself opted for Freddie Freeman over Tucker, who I suspect won't be as impactful in stolen bases as many are hoping.

Pairing Freeman with Mike Trout at the Round 1-2 turn was in adherence to what I'm calling the Zero-SB strategy, which isn't so much about punting the category as just not deliberately pursuing it. Stolen bases are so scarce that it doesn't take much to finish in the middle of the pack, and all those 10-to-15-steal guys add up. I did relent a little in Round 20 with Nicky Lopez, who should also help in batting average, but passing over Trey Mancini for him doesn't feel like as big of a concession as, say, passing over Pete Alonso for Randy Arozarena in Round 5.

Some other observations:

  • Francisco Lindor and Tim Anderson both went in Round 3, which is way early for my liking. Both seem like instances of overpaying for what's only a modest steals projection. Anderson is also a batting average standout, but taking into account all five categories instead of just those two, I expect Xander Bogaerts and Corey Seager to be more impactful overall. Maybe Wander Franco as well. They went in Rounds 4, 5 and 5.
  • I'm still having a hard time passing up Austin Riley around the 3-4 turn. I don't love his value there, but I don't love anyone's value there. Might as well knock out the scarcest position, right?
  • Then again, Justin Turner lasted to Round 21, so maybe the concerns at third base have been overstated? Probably not. I suspect most of us just tuned out the position once we had already gotten ours.
  • Justin Verlander at the beginning of Round 7 is about the most respect I've seen anyone give him so far, and while it's a little early even for me, I agree with the general sentiment.
