Vinny Nittoli: Elects free agency

Nittoli rejected the Cubs' outright assignment to Triple-A Iowa and elected free agency, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

The right-hander was designated for assignment by Chicago on Friday and won't stick around after passing through waivers unclaimed. Nittoli has made seven appearances at the big-league level this season -- all with the Athletics -- and has allowed two earned runs with a 5:2 K:BB over eight innings.
