Preakness Stakes 2021 payouts: Rombauer wins in an upset followed by Midnight Bourbon and Medina Spirit

Medina Spirit 2021 Kentucky Derby
USATSI

The 2021 Preakness Stakes is in the books and Rombauer (11-1) is the winner at Pimlico. Rombauer, ridden by Flavien Prat, outran co-favorites Midnight Bourbon and Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit, sprinting the two leaders down the back stretch to capture the bed of Black Eyed Susans and keep the Triple Crown of American thoroughbred racing on the shelf for 2021.

Before the race, SportsLine's Bob Weir listed Rombauer among his contenders to win:

"It's fair to question if he will ultimately be better on the turf, but his dirt performances are competitive enough. He finished a well beaten third in the Blue Grass behind Essential Quality and Highly Motivated but was clear another four lengths to fourth. I'm expecting him to drop back and make a late run. I suspect it will come up a little short, but if a pace battle does occur early, he's the one to fear late."

Rombauer was two lengths off the pace at the top of the stretch before closing in a blur to win the Preakness for owners Diane and John Fradkin and trainer Mike McCarthy.

The the final jewel of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes, is set for June 5 at Belmont Park in Long Island, New York.

Rombauer with the win! SportsLine's Bob Weir had him as a win contender, with this to say:

"6 Rombauer (12-1) is worth a look. It's fair to question if he will ultimately be better on the turf, but his dirt performances are competitive enough. He finished a well beaten third in the Blue Grass behind Essential Quality and Highly Motivated but was clear another four lengths to fourth. I'm expecting him to drop back and make a late run. Jonathon Kinchen is one of the nation's most successful and recognizable horseplayers. An analyst for Fox Sports' America's Day at the Races and co-host of the In the Money Players' Podcast, Kinchen won the National Horseplayers Championship Tour in 2015, a demanding, yearlong series of handicapping events across the country. At the 2015 Kentucky Derby, he cashed for $150,000 after nailing the Pick 6 and a Pick 3 that paid $50,000. He also hit multiple exactas during Kentucky Derby weekend at Churchill Downs this year, and another exacta in the Maryland Sprint Stakes earlier today. Anyone that has followed his picks is up big.

We can tell you Kinchen is completely fading Medina Spirit AND Concert Tour, even though they're the top two favorites in the 2021 Preakness Stakes. Instead, one of his top contenders is a double-digit long shot who "could win the whole thing," which would provide a huge return if it hits. You can see that pick and Kinchen's entire Preakness wagering strategy by heading over to SportsLine.

Crowded Trade remains at 8-1, while Unbridled Honor drops to 12-1, which are the same odds on Keepmeinmind. Risk Taking and Rombauer join Ram at 13-1, while France Go De Ina moves to 22-1.

Beyer Speed Figure maker Bob Weir has had multiple five-figure days at the track and has crushed 3-year-old races this year. He hit the exacta in the Sam F. Davis Stakes and Tampa Bay Derby and the trifecta in the Risen Star Stakes and Blue Grass Stakes, with the Tampa Bay Derby score returning $1,414! Those are just some of his scores in 2021. Now, he targets the second leg of the Triple Crown: the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course.

Weir is almost completely fading Medina Spirit, even though he won the Kentucky Derby. "If you didn't love him at 12-1 in Kentucky, it's hard to accept him two weeks later as the favorite in the Preakness," Weir told SportsLine.

Instead, Weir is high on a double-digit long shot who is "the one to fear late." Get Weir's picks and wagering strategy for the Preakness over at SportsLine.

Our latest Preakness odds update sees Ram move from 12-1 to 13-1, with the longest of shots France Go De Ina moving from 20-1 to 21-1. The other eight horses remain the same, including Midnight Bourbon remaining the favorite at 5-2 and 2021 Kentucky Derby winner Media Spirit sitting at 3-1.

The Chad Brown-trained Sacred Life will try to break an eight-race losing streak in graded/group stakes races when he leaves the starting gate in the 2021 Dinner Party Stakes on Preakness Saturday at Pimlico Race Course. Sacred Life is the 7-5 morning-line favorite in the 2021 Dinner Party odds. Post time is 5:38 p.m. ET.

Sharp handicapper and Beyer Speed Figure maker Bob Weir has had multiple five-figure days at the track and crushed the exacta in the Tampa Bay Derby in March for $1,414. Now he targets the Dinner Party Stakes on Preakness Saturday at Pimlico Race Course.

One shocker: Weir is mostly against Sacred Life even though he is the 7-5 morning-line favorite. "I think he's worth playing against in this spot," Weir tells SportsLine. Weir does not have Sacred Life on top on any of his wagers.

In addition, Weir is high on a double-digit long shot who "might work out the perfect trip" on Saturday! Weir is including this horse in his 2021 Dinner Party bets, and so should you.

Once the youngest person to qualify for the National Horseplayers Championship, astute racing analyst Matt Bernier has cashed some Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks future bets at enormous odds, including 75-1 on I'll Have Another in 2012, 75-1 on Orb in 2013 and 35-1 on Shedaresthedevil in 2020. Now he offers his picks and wagers for the second leg of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes, over at SportsLine.

One shocker: Bernier is completely tossing Concert Tour, even though he was one of the top favorites at 5-2. "It must be acknowledged that his performance in the Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park last month was putrid, and it is extremely difficult to take a horse coming off such a poor performance at a very short price," Bernier told SportsLine.

In addition, Bernier is high on a double-digit long shot who's set to turn heads in the Preakness. You can see his Preakness picks and full wagering analysis by heading over to SportsLine.

Speed will be on display when 11 accomplished sprinters take off from the starting gate in the 2021 Maryland Sprint Match Series Stakes on Preakness Saturday at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md. The Steve Asmussen-trained Strike Power is the 7-2 morning-line favorite in the Maryland Sprint odds. Post time for the race is 4:41 p.m. ET.

Before making any 2021 Maryland Sprint picks, you need to see how handicapping champion Jonathon Kinchen has broken down the race. We can tell you Kinchen is completely fading Seven Nation Army even though he is the third choice on the morning line, at 5-1. Kinchen will not have Seven Nation Army on any of his tickets. However Kinchen is high on a long shot who is "sitting on a big race." Kinchen is including this horse in his wagering, and so should you.

Some of the country's top sprinters square off when the starting gate opens in the 2021 Jim McKay Turf Sprint Stakes on Preakness Saturday at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md. The Jose Delgado-trained The Critical Way is the 5-2 morning-line favorite in the 2021 Jim McKay Turf Sprint odds. Post time is 4:05 p.m. ET.

Based in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., racing insider Bob Weir has been handicapping and following horse racing since reading Andy Beyer's landmark handicapping book "Picking Winners" in the late 1980s. Weir is highly invested in the Beyer Speed Figure, a number assigned to every race run by a horse that measures how fast the horse ran. He uses the figure as the backbone of his handicapping. In fact, thanks to his proficiency with speed figures and top-tier handicapping, he landed one of just eight spots on Beyer's figure-making team in 2017, a position he holds to this day.

Now, he has handicapped the 2021 Jim McKay Turf Sprint field, made his picks and constructed his bets.

One shocker: Weir is high on Hollis, even though he's an underdog at 6-1. "He won this race last year when it was run in October," Weir tells SportsLine. Weir is using Hollis prominently in all of his wagers. In addition, Weir is high on a double-digit long shot who "can improve" on Saturday! Weir is including this horse in his 2021 Jim McKay Turf Sprint bets, and so should you.

Legendary handicapper Hank Goldberg famously nailed a $24,000 winner in the 2004 Belmont Stakes by going straight to the source and backing a 36-1 longshot that delivered.

For the 146th Preakness, we can tell you Goldberg is fading Concert Tour, even though he is a two-time graded stakes winner and one of the top favorites. Instead, Goldberg is backing a double-digit underdog who's flying under the radar despite a stellar track record. You can find that horse, along with the rest of Goldberg's top picks and horses to fade, by heading over to SportsLine.

Horse racing guru Jody Demling has picked the winner of the Preakness in nine of the last 16 years. In 2020, he nailed the Swiss Skydiver-Authentic exacta while correctly fading the Kentucky Derby winner.

This year, Demling is also fading the Derby winner in the Preakness, but he's high on a long shot who "will be coming" down the stretch at Pimlico. Check out Demling's top Preakness plays and full projected leaderboard over at SportsLine.

Welcome to our coverage of the Preakness, the second jewel of the Triple Crown. Medina Spirit will look to pick up a second straight win after a shocking victory in the Kentucky Derby, followed by news that the horse tested positive for a steroid and the subsequent agreement to allow Medina Spirit to compete in this race after passing three drug tests.

However, it's Midnight Bourbon who enters the day as the favorite after finishing sixth at Churchill Downs. The latest Preakness odds update at SportsLine has Midnight Bourbon as the 5/2 favorite, with Medina Spirit at 3/1 and Concert Tour at 9/2. We'll keep you updated on how those odds are shifting throughout the day as well as share the SportsLine expert picks for the Preakness as well as several other races.
