2025 FedEx St. Jude Championship leaderboard: Akshay Bhatia on top with 62, Scottie Scheffler five shots back

The 19th edition of the FedEx Cup Playoffs got underway Thursday with a career first by one of the youngest competitors in the field serving as the highlight. Akshay Bhatia surged past the rest of the pack in the opening round of the 2025 St. Jude Championship, carding an 8-under 62 to set a new personal best on the PGA Tour while taking the first-round lead by one stroke over Tommy Fleetwood.

"It's a ball striker's golf course," Bhatia said. "Statistically, guys who have won here in the past, it's about ball striking off the tee. That's something that is suited to my game. I think, too, some of these holes suit my eye. There's maybe one or two holes that don't. But I feel like I can just kind of play my game, and there's not too many uncomfortable shots out there for me."

Ball striking? Bhatia did exactly that during his opening refrain at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee. The lengthy left hander split 10 fairways and connected on 15 greens in regulation en route to leading the field in strokes gained tee to green. The result was a 4-under total through his first 15 holes before Bhatia caught lightning in a bottle with his finish as he carded three straight 3s -- highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 16th -- to double his under-par score to 8 under by the time he walked off the last.

Bhatia is projected to move from No. 45 in the FedEx Cup standings all the way up to No. 4 should he hold onto victory, which will be a tall task given the cast of characters that lurk behind him. In addition to a trio of Englishmen that includes not only Fleetwood but Harry Hall and Justin Rose at 6 under, a plethora of American Ryder Cup hopefuls in Ben Griffin, Maverick McNealy, Brian Harman and Wyndham Clark have played themselves into the mix.

Ultra-reliable Russell Henley is in the hunt as well after an opening 66 early in the day, and Collin Morikawa matched that number later in the evening. Those two figures pale in comparison to the presence in the rearview mirror that is world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.

It was clinical from the man who finished the regular season atop the FedEx Cup standings and will enter the BMW Championship in that same position no matter this week's result. Scheffler was steady as they come in Round 1 missing only a few fairways, choosing his spots wisely and settling in on the greens for the most part. The result was a ho-hum 67 and another round which made it feel all but certain that Scheffler will be standing there with a chance to win come Sunday afternoon.

"Today was a good day. I did some solid stuff," Scheffler said. "Felt like I was close to playing a really great round but ended up with a solid round. Overall a decent start."

The leader

1. Akshay Bhatia (-8): Bhatia underlying metrics have been solid this season, but he came into the St. Jude Championship without a top-10 finish since the Players Championship. While a final-round 75 at the 3M Open had something to do with it, Bhatia mentioned that his insistence on checking his place in the world of golf -- whether the season-long race or Official World Golf Rankings -- did as well.

There will be no need for Bhatia to check the leaderboard Thursday night as he knows he stands atop the opening round of the FedEx Cup Playoffs thanks to another splendid ball-striking performance. But what will the next 54 holes have in store? Will Bhatia's lingering mind get the better of him, or will he learn from his mistakes from a couple of weeks ago?

"I've been looking at a lot of numbers that I don't need to look at -- obviously FedExCup, world ranking, and I'm still doing it, and I still catch myself doing it," Bhatia admitted. "But I'm just really trying to have a little more peace on the golf course. I think this game can consume your life, your happiness, and so I'm just trying to figure out ways to change that because I feel like I don't really want to live my life based off of an unstable game. That's going to drive me nuts. This whole year it has, so I'm just trying to be just a little more at ease with whatever I shoot."

Other contenders

2. Tommy Fleetwood (-7)
T3. Bud Cauley, Justin Rose, Harry Hall (-6)
6. Si Woo Kim (-5)
T7. Maverick McNealy, Ben Griffin, Russell Henley, Rickie Fowler, Collin Morikawa (-4)

Rose started his week battling an illness and then started his tournament with a stellar 64. The 45-year-old's season has been defined by its peaks as he has factored in big-time tournaments such as the Masters, Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Open while largely falling flat the rest of the year.

He noted that his intensity and his focus both see an uptick when the magnitude rises as it has with the arrival of the postseason. On Thursday, Rose rose to the occasion, primarily with his driver, which will hold the keys to his success for the rest of the week given the requirement to play from the short grass at TPC Southwind.

"Well, it was my first time on the golf course this week," Rose said. "Funny how that can work sometimes. I didn't feel my best. Had to pull out of the pro-am. Was just sort of suffering with a little man flu. You know how that goes.

"Really kind of made sure I took the last couple days to be ready for today. I guess maybe sometimes expectation drops in those scenarios. Yeah, came out really and had a good warm-up on the range, felt fine this morning, felt well. Was able to take that good warm-up from the range on to the golf course, and really felt like I played really solid golf today."

Many notable names who needed to make moves did just that Thursday with Clark, Fowler and Spieth all projected to finish inside the top 50 if they hold their positions. They were aided not only by their own good play but the poor play from the likes of Knapp and Lee, the latter of whom entered the week as the bubble boy at No. 50 and finished the day as the low man on the leaderboard in dead last at 6 over.

"I know I need a good finish," Fowler said. "I don't know exactly where that is. Obviously the higher the finish, the better chance I have. A win would take care of a lot of things. I mean, I know roughly, but I just need to go play some good golf and put myself where I'm in a position and have a chance to go win on Sunday."

2025 St. Jude Championship updated odds and picks

Odds via FanDuel Sportsbook

  • Scottie Scheffler: 5/2
  • Tommy Fleetwood: 9/2
  • Akshay Bhatia: 7-1
  • Harry Hall: 14-1
  • Russell Henley: 18-1
  • Collin Morikawa: 20-1
  • Justin Rose: 22-1
  • Matt Fitzpatrick: 22-1
  • Ben Griffin: 22-1

This could be curtains if Scheffler finds his footing on the greens, which he likely will! But where is the fun in that? I still think Henley has a solid shot at taking this tournament home as he was solid Thursday with a 66. His price still remains attractive, too. Cameron Young at 150-1 could be worth a small sliver as well as he was second only to Bhatia in terms of ball striking Thursday and stands at 1 under.

Scheffler shoots 67; right in the thick of it

The world No. 1 was unable to finish in a flurry and misses a 4-foot par save on the last to settle for a 3-under 67. It was a ho-hum day for most of his round before Scheffler hit some turbulence across the final three holes in the form of some wayward drives to the right. Scheffler was super steady from tee to green but didn't make much on the greens — all four birdies came inside 8 feet.

Scheffler entering a scoring stretch

The world No. 1 just laced a long iron to 8 feet on the tough par-3 14th and will have that putt to reach 4 under on the day and potentially kick start a patented Scottie Scheffler surge to the finish line. Nos. 15-17 at TPC Southwind are all playing under par while the finisher is hovering a shade over par meaning Scheffler's name may be rising on this leaderboard shortly.

Here comes Bud Cauley

Starting the week outside the top 50, Bud Cauley has made his move. He just knocked in a 16-foot birdie on No. 17 for his third straight circle on the scorecard and to reach 7 under on the day. He will have a chance to catch Akshay Bhatia should he birdie the last which Bhatia did earlier in the day.

Morikawa making a move

This is a welcomed sight following a pair of early exits overseas. Collin Morikawa rolls in a beauty on the par-4 10th and gets to 4 under on his round and inside the top five. Morikawa will have a great chance to take it even deeper on the backside as the inward stretch is playing easier today.

Russell Henley impresses again

Mr. Consistent is at it again. Russell Henley rolls in a 14-foot birdie putt on his final hole to come in with a 4-under 66 and position himself only four strokes behind Akshay Bhatia. Henley has a streak of four straight top-10 finishes coming into this week and will be a fixture on leaderboards across these next three weeks.

Scheffler starts strong

To the surprise of no one, Scottie Scheffler is off an running. Through three holes, he has given himself three birdie chances from 13 feet, 6 feet and now just inside 3 feet. He has done well to convert two of them and is now 2 under for the tournament.

The top-two FedEx Cup players begin their postseasons

Scottie Scheffler and Sepp Straka have stepped onto the golf course as the FedEx Cup No. 1 and No. 3 share a tee time on Thursday. Even if Straka wins, Scheffler will take the lead into the BMW Championship given his substantial lead over the Austrian. Both players have fared well at this golf course at various points in their careers, but it will be interesting if they do so again on a recently renovated golf course.

Bhatia finishes in a flurry

What a round from the lengthy left hander! Akshay Bhatia connects on 10 fairways and 15 greens in regulation and finishes his first round in a flurry to take a possible two-stroke lead into the second round. Bhatia finished 3-3-3 playing his final three holes in a 4-under fashion to surge past the rest of the leading pack with his 8-under 62.

Spieth, Clark make move to solidify spots inside top 50

Both Jordan Spieth and Wyndham Clark found red figures early Thursday morning and have done some work to make sure their names are in the field for next week's BMW Championship. Clark carded just one bogey — on the par-5 16th — and continued to strike the ball well en route to a 3-under 67. Meanwhile, Spieth drove it great and was solid on the greens. His iron play may need to improve if he is to improve on his 69.

U.S. Open champs continuing their good form

Both Matt Fitzpatrick and Wyndham Clark experienced brutal starts to 2025 and have since regained their form heading into the postseason. They have continued to keep a good thing going here on Thursday a Fitzpatrick founds himself among three tied for the lead at 4 under while Clark just converted a nice par save from 15 feet on the par-4 15th. Clark entered the week just inside the top 50 with a little work to do.

Bhatia bouncing along nicely

Outside the 3M Open, Akshay Bhatia has not contended this summer on the PGA Tour, but early on in the St. Jude Championship it appears he is well on his way to changing that. He just stuffed his approach into the par-3 11th and taps in for his fifth birdie of the morning to grab a one-stroke lead over Matt Fitzpatrick.

Poor start for the bubble boy

It's been tough sledding for Min Woo Lee ever since he beat Scottie Scheffler at the Houston Open, and the first nine holes of his St. Jude Championship have taken on the same shape. Lee entered the week as the bubble boy at No. 50 in the season-long race and he just turned in 3 over after his opening nine. He is ahead of only one name on the leaderboard in the very (very) early stages of this tournament.

Spieth grabs his first birdie of the day

After an opening bogey, Jordan Spieth has gotten back to even par thanks to a 15-foot connection on the par-4 6th. Spieth is rolling the rock with confidence today as his mechanics look to be in a very solid position and the results are following. He is one of the many bubble boys at the onset of the week as he ranks No. 48 in the FedEx Cup.

Fitzpatrick off to a fast start

The Englishman may have entered this week as the hottest player in the world (non-Scottie Scheffler division) with four straight top-10 finishes and he has continued his tear early. He rolls in two early birdies on the first two holes to grab the early lead and steps to the par-5 3rd looking to bowl a turkey.
