2025 BMW Championship leaderboard: Robert MacIntyre extends lead over Scottie Scheffler through Round 2

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The 49-man field at the 2025 BMW Championship was greeted by a much friendlier course at Caves Valley Golf Club on Friday as the rain that caused a two-hour delay to open play created softer greens and fairways that allowed for some low scores. Robert MacIntyre came into Friday's second round with a three-shot advantage, and the 29-year-old Scotsman picked up where he left off six more birdies to post a bogey-free 64, reaching 14 under for the tournament and pushing his lead to five shots over Scottie Scheffler going into the weekend.

MacIntyre leads the field in strokes gained putting and on approach after the first two rounds, which is an incredible feat given the field is comprised of the best players in the world. While his first round was fueled by a red-hot putter -- rolling in nearly 200 feet of putts Thursday -- it was the iron play that pushed him to a 64 on Friday as he was dialed with the approach game to take some of the stress off his flat stick.

MacIntyre noted that the key to his strong week putting so far has been giving himself chances from the correct areas of the green on the fast greens at Caves Valley.

"You've just got to be on the right side of the holes. Everyone will say it: If you're on the wrong side of the holes, it's going to be carnage out here," he explained. "I feel like this week I've really done a good job of getting it underneath the hole to be able to be aggressive with an uphill putt. The hardest putts are the ones probably 5, 6, 7, 8 feet down the hill where you're just breathing on it, touching it to get it going and you just stand there and watch it bob and weave its way down the hill and fearing where it's going to end."

MacIntyre will face a different test of his game Saturday as he'll be joined by Scheffler in the final pairing after Scheffler did his best to keep pace with a Friday 65. That moved him into solo second at 9 under, still five back of MacIntyre. The world No. 1 got off to a hot start once again with three birdies in his first five holes, adding two more on Nos. 11 and 12 before calling it a day. Like MacIntyre, he went bogey-free Friday but couldn't replicate his fiery close from Thursday and made six straight pars to conclude his round.

While Scheffler would have loved to get closer to MacIntyre on that concluding stretch, his effort was still enough to earn a spot in the final pairing where he'll get to apply some direct pressure to the leader. Scheffler's main weapon this week has been his driver; he's second in driving distance at 329 yards and third in accuracy, hitting 22 of 28 fairways through two rounds. His ball striking has been pedestrian (18th in the field), but if he can start dialing in the irons and wedges to his normal standard, he will certainly make MacIntyre sweat a bit down the stretch.

The leader

1. Robert MacIntyre (-14): It would be dfficult to draw up a better start to a tournament than a 62-64 in which both rounds were at least tied for the low mark of the day. MacIntyre has created a five-shot cushion and looks comfortable with all aspects of his game right now. We'll see how he handles a third-round pairing with Scheffler, but nothing about the way MacIntyre is playing right now suggests he's going to give the field chasing him much. Anyone that is looking to catch MacIntyre is going to have to play some spectacular golf to prevent him from hoisting the BMW Championship trophy at the end of the weekend.

Contenders

2. Scottie Scheffler (-9)
3. Ludvig Åberg (-8)
4. Hideki Matsuyama (-7)
T5. Tommy Fleetwood, Michael Kim, Maverick McNealy (-6)
T8. Harry Hall, Sam Burns, Viktor Hovland (-5)
11. Rory McIlroy (-4)

Scheffler is simply relentless in his execution, and he seemed to get even more comfortable with playing Caves Valley on Friday. It feels like he's going to keep putting up rounds in the mid-60s and force MacIntyre to keep his scoring pace up to stay ahead.

Åberg and Matsuyama got into the mix with matching 64s thanks to a couple red-hot back nine 31s to dart up the leaderboard into the top five. Neither player has been up to his preferred standard for much of this season, but both have a chance to close out this tournament strong heading into the Tour Championship.

McNealy also shot a 64 to make a big move on Friday, and he did so with Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley watching closely as his playing partner. He's not only looking to try and climb into the top 10 in the FedEx Cup standings but hoping to make a strong closing argument for one of the six captain's picks for Bethpage Black.

Fleetwood came into the day in second place and got off to a terrific start with a front-nine 32, but three bogeys in his final five holes took the wind out of his sails and made his job much more difficult going into the weekend in his continued quest for a win. McIlroy, meanwhile, made an early double bogey on the par-3 third, but he got it going on the back, including making the only eagle of the day by any player on any hole on the par-5 16th to move just outside the top 10 going into the weekend.

2025 BMW Championship updated odds, picks

  • Robert MacIntyre (6/5)
  • Scottie Scheffler (7/5)
  • Ludvig Åberg (10-1)
  • Hideki Matsuyama (28-1)
  • Tommy Fleetwood (30-1)

It's pretty wild that MacIntyre is almost at coin-flip odds with Scheffler given he has a five-shot lead. It's worth buying him at this price, even if Scheffler is Scheffler. Should Åberg continue to carry his Friday form through the weekend, he's a legit threat even as he's six shots back. There's definitely value there at 10-1.

Rory McIlroy makes the first eagle of the day on the 16th

The first eagle of the day on any hole comes courtesy of Rory McIlroy on the par-5 16th. McIlroy pumped a drive down the middle and then launched a 3 wood right at the flag, leaving less than 10 feet up the hill for his eagle. McIlroy rolled that putt in to put a 3 on the card and move from 2 under to 4 under, jumping into 11th alone, and while he's 10 back of Robert MacIntyre, he's putting together a strong back nine to get back into red figures and get into the mix for a top 10 going into the weekend.

FedEx Cup Bubble Watch

The battle for the Tour Championship will be part of the storyline all weekend and as of right now two players have moved inside the top 30 with their play so far this week. Michael Kim (-6) has moved from 42nd to 26th in the projections at T5, and Harry Hall (-5) has gone from 45th to 30th in T7. On the other side it's Akshay Bhatia (+4) who has gone from 29th to 32nd and Lucas Glover (+8) who has gone from 30th to 38th.

Sungjae Im (+6) and Chris Gotterup (+3) have slipped back to 28th and 29th in the projections and could be in some trouble if others keep moving up the leaderboard. Rickie Fowler (-4), Taylor Pendrith (-2), Jason Day (-1) and Denny McCarthy (-1) all could make moves into the top 10 and threaten for one of those top 30 spots and put Im and Gotterup outside that cut line for East Lake.

Scottie Scheffler birdies the tough 12th to move into solo second

Scheffler now has birdies on the two hardest holes on the golf course in his second round, getting his first of the day on the 2nd and adding another on the 12th -- the two par 5s converted to par 4s for this week's event. On the 12th, Scheffler split the fairway and then launched a long iron straight at the flag and got it to stick just behind the pin to set up a short birdie putt for his fifth of the day.

Scheffler is bogey-free on his first 12 holes and is now just five back of Robert MacIntyre, and if he can pick up another birdie or two on his way in he can make sure the young Scot has to really feel his presence on the weekend.

Ludvig Åberg shoots 64, takes solo clubhouse second at -8

Ludvig Åberg hasn't been at the top of leaderboards as regularly as we grew accustomed to last year and the beginning of this season, but the talented young Swede might be rounding into some form at Caves Valley. A 64 on Friday matched Robert MacIntyre and Hideki Matsuyama for the low round of the day, as he moved into solo second in the clubhouse at 8 under with his performance.

Åberg sits six shots behind MacIntyre, but would jump up to 6th in the FedEx Cup standings with a solo second this week. He got things going on his back nine with five birdies to shoot a 4-under 31 on the second side, and seemed to find that tempo with his swing that was the hallmark of his meteoric rise up the world rankings when he arrived on the PGA Tour.

Robert MacIntyre stays hot with Friday 64 to take a 7-shot lead at 14 under

Bobby Mac had it on cruise control again on Friday, carrying over his fantastic play from late Thursday into his second round. MacIntyre backed up his 62 with a 64 to move to 14 under for the tournament, as he's doubling up the field right now as Scottie Scheffler, Tommy Fleetwood and Hideki Matsuyama are tied for second at 7 under.

Matsuyama was paired with MacIntyre and matched his Friday 64, as those two tore up Caves Valley on Friday in a spectacular display of ball-striking. MacIntyre leads the field in strokes gained on approach and putting, which is quite the combination and explains his massive lead. Matsuyama, meanwhile, has been scrambling and putting beautifully, as he's yet to make a bogey through two rounds.

Those two will watch this afternoon to see where they end up at the end of play on Friday, with MacIntyre wondering how big his lead will be and Matsuyama waiting to find out who, if anyone, can best his number for second place going into the weekend.

Scottie Scheffler goes -3 thru 5 to get into second

Scheffler has a lot of work to do to catch up to Robert MacIntyre, but the world No. 1 is off to a hot start for the second straight day. He's got three birdies in his first five holes to move to 7 under, tied with Hideki Matsuyama for second. Scheffler closed with three birdies in his final four holes yesterday, as he enjoyed his time on the softer greens and has carried that over to Friday. However, with MacIntyre going low again with a 64 to get to 14 under, Scheffler is going to have to keep his foot down and pile up birdies the rest of the day to create some stress for MacIntyre going into the weekend.

Hideki Matsuyama moves into second alone at -7

Matsuyama is paired with Robert MacIntyre and those two have been feeding off of each other on Friday to a pair of fantastic rounds. MacIntyre has run out to a 7-stroke lead at 14 under, and that lead is now over Matsuyama, who is 6 under on his round after a birdie on the long par-3 17th. As he was making that birdie, Tommy Fleetwood made a bogey on the 15th and fell back to 6 under, meaning the MacIntyre-Matsuyama pairing is now 1-2 on the leaderboard as they play the 18th.

Robert MacIntyre pours in another long birdie to get to 13 under

It's looking like a runaway for Bobby Mac at Caves Valley, as he is lapping the field currently. MacIntyre looks like he'll take full advantage of getting more time on the softer golf course playing late yesterday and early today, but even the others in that wave aren't doing anything close to what he is. He's now 5 under for his second round (the low round on the golf course) and has a 5-shot lead over Tommy Fleetwood and is 8 shots clear of the quartet tied for third place at 5 under. If this continues, the BMW Championship will stand for "Bobby Mac Wins".

Robert MacIntyre makes the turn at -11, four ahead of Tommy Fleetwood

A 3-under 32 on the front nine has Robert MacIntyre four clear of second place, as he continues to tear up Caves Valley. The Scotsman birdied Nos. 1, 4, and 7 and has dealt with very little in the way of stress so far in his second round. Tommy Fleetwood is a couple groups behind him and has it to -7 after a couple early birdies and is trying to keep pace with MacIntyre, who now moves to the back nine where he shot 29 on Thursday.

Sam Burns off to a hot start, joins Tommy Fleetwood in T2

Sam Burns is -3 thru 6 so far on Friday, as he's enjoying the soft conditions at Caves Valley and has moved into a tie for second alongside Tommy Fleetwood at 5 under. They're sitting five shots off the pace set by Robert MacIntyre, who is -2 thru 5 on his second round and looks in full control of his golf ball. A big week for Burns will add to the difficulty Keegan Bradley faces in making his captain's picks, as Burns is another American who has made a late surge this season.

Robert MacIntyre starts the second round with his 7th straight birdie

After closing Thursday evening with six straight birdies, Robert MacIntyre picked up right where he left off on his first hole on Friday. A good tee shot left him a wedge in for his second and he stuffed it inside 5 feet, taking advantage of the soft greens to throw a dart at the flag. After pouring in nearly 200 feet of putts on Thursday, a five-footer might as well be a gimme for MacIntyre right now and he's now 9 under, four clear of Tommy Fleetwood in second. MacIntyre is going to enjoy the softest of conditions this morning as the course figures to dry out some as the day wears on, and he could put some distance between himself and the field.

The biggest question for Friday's second round

As play gets underway, all eyes will be on how Caves Valley's greens play today after yesterday's rain storm. There were much better scoring conditions after the delay, with Robert MacIntyre, Tommy Fleetwood and Scottie Scheffler making their moves up the leaderboard after the rain swept through.

The greens will likely dry out some as the day goes on (provided there's not more rain this afternoon), so those in the morning wave might get a softer, more gettable course. MacIntyre is among those going out this morning (10:27 a.m.), while Scheffler and Rory McIlroy (1:38 p.m.) won't get out until the course has had a bit of a chance to firm up.
