After 25 years on the bag with Phil Mickelson, Jim "Bones" Mackay is turning in his caddie bib for a microphone and headset. The Golf Channel announced on Thursday he has joined the network on a multi-year deal as an on-course reporter.

Mackay previously served as an on-course reporter for a one-week stint with the network during the 2015 RSM Classic.

"During my years as a caddie, I had the opportunity to watch Tommy Roy work his magic in the production truck, and walk the fairways with Notah Begay, Roger Maltbie and Mark Rolfing," Mackay said. "To join them and be a part of the coverage of some of golf's biggest events - starting with The Open - is an opportunity I'm grateful for, and I'm eager to add my take to help illustrate the strategic decisions golfers face inside the ropes."

Mackay's first assignment will be The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, and he will also work the Presidents Cup along with other events culminating with the Tour Championship. The Golf Channel says it expects a full schedule for him in 2018.

The 25-year stint with Mickelson ended in a mutual split as the two decided to take different directions. Mickelson, meanwhile, has his brother Tim on the bag for the remainder of the season.
