Newly-signed Giants closer Mark Melancon set the record for a relief pitcher's contract in free agency on Monday when he signed a four-year, $62 million deal. Common sentiment around the game is that will change as soon as either Kenley Jansen or Aroldis Chapman signs.

In the case of the latter, we provide you the following report:

Now, we have been hearing that the hardest driving teams for either Chapman or Jansen have been the Marlins, Yankees and Dodgers, with the Nationals as a possibility. Jon Heyman reports that the Marlins won't go that high.

Past that, we're left wondering. Could this be a bid from the Dodgers, Yankees or Nats? Sure. They certainly have the money. Could it be someone else, one of those so-called "mystery teams?" Yes again. Remember when the Angels were that team two straight years with Albert Pujols and then Josh Hamilton? It happens.

Another possibility: This $92 million rumor was a plant. Maybe it's an agent telling a team in hopes it gets floated and an offer from someone else rolls in around that mark. Maybe it's a team trying to mess with other teams for some reason or another. This also happens.

It's just so difficult to discern what is going on until anything is official.

For now, consider it possible Chapman has a $92 million offer in hand. Unless he doesn't.
