Q&A: Talking Warriors with Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz
Adam Duritz of the Counting Crows talks to CBSSports.com about being a huge fan of the Golden State Warriors.

Oracle Arena is affectionately known as the “Roaracle” for good reasons. The Golden State Warriors’ passionate fanbase cheer so loudly at home that opposing coaches wonder if it is legal. The “Roarcle” helped the Warriors finish the regular season with a league best 39-2 record at home, making it one of the most difficult places in the NBA to play in.
But Warriors Nation is strong all across the country. During the regular season, Blake Griffin complained about Warriors fans invading Staples Center to shower Stephen Curry with MVP chants. Curry’s jersey was the second most popular this season and he was the overall lead vote-getter at the 2015 All-Star game.
While plenty of Warriors’ games are shown on national TV, many fans signed up for NBA League Pass just to be able to witness their exciting brand of basketball on a nightly basis. This is exactly what Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz did.
Duritz lives in New York but became a Warriors fan growing up in Oakland. Thanks to League Pass, he has been frequently watching the Warriors for the past three seasons. Like a true fan he even tweets from the Counting Crows’ Twitter account while watching:
AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! @Andre Iguodala!!!!!!!!!!!! #GoldenState @Warriors!!!!!

This was a 3pt 52-49 @Warriors lead at halftime. Then the Dubs outscored @WashWizards 29-8 in the 3rd qtr and held them to ONLY ONE FG!!!!

Before the Counting Crows could embark on their Somewhere Under Wonderland tour through Canada and the United States, CBSSports.com caught up with Duritz over the phone to talk about his intense Warriors’ fandom.
The following Q&A is lightly edited for clarity and flow.
CBSSports.com: I noticed that the Counting Crows Twitter account tweets a lot about the Warriors. Did your fandom start just by living in Oakland?
Adam Durtiz: Well, I am the Counting Crows Twitter. I had someone else doing it for a bit but I took it over and am now basically the only one who is allowed to use our Twitter account.
I grew up in Oakland. After we moved from Texas, we were there a couple years before the Warriors won their championship in 1975. It was a very cool time to be a kid in Oakland. The A’s were in the middle of winning three World Series in a row and the Raiders were amazing. Then a couple years later, the Raiders won the Super Bowl and the Warriors won the NBA Championship. It was just awesome to live there during that time.
As a kid I was a Celtics fan because I lived in Boston for a bit but once I got to Oakland, I fell in love with the Warriors. I will always remember my dad got me a Tim Hardaway signed ball when I was in high school.
CBSSports.com: Living in New York, how do you watch the Warriors?
Adam Duritz: Honestly, the NBA is very hard to watch during the season. It is very tough to watch every game but about three years ago, I watched a few Warriors games and they were so good that I got NBA League Pass so I can watch them here in New York. After that, I tried to watch every Warriors game that I could.
This year it is ridiculous, I have seen almost every game. Even when I was on tour in Australia I watched. One of our friends was recording Warriors games on his DVR and then we would watch it through the Comcast website using his account. For a few of the other ones, we would get up in the middle of the night and find an illegal European stream of the game online.
CBSSports.com: That is really cool. Do you peek at the score during shows?
Adam Duritz: Thankfully in Australia the games weren’t on during shows because of the big time difference. We would just watch afterwards. We are about to go on a tour in Canada and the U.S. but I pack an Apple TV so hopefully we can just watch games together in my room or on the bus.
CBSSports.com: Does the entire band watch the Warriors?
Adam Duritz: There are really three of us that love the Warriors. It is the Oakland guys of the group.
CBSSports.com: Out of their entire franchise history, who is your favorite Warrior?
Adam Duritz: Jamaal Wilkes. I just thought he was the coolest guy in the world. When I got older, I met him a couple of times because I know his sons. Each time that I met him, it was just a really cool experience.
I love Hardaway and Chris Mullen as well. Those guys were just incredible to watch.
I love this year’s team though. I am obsessed with Draymond Green though. He is f-----g amazing. One of my friends knows a lot of those guys so the last time they were in New York to play the Knicks, I went and met a lot of the players after the game. Afterwards I had dinner with David Lee and Festus Ezeli which was nice, they are good guys.
CBSSports.com: What has been your favorite Steph Curry highlight this season?
Adam Duritz: They have been so many.
The one he had the other night, where he drove through three people, lost the ball, got it back and then threw it to Andrew Bogut for the dunk was unbelievable. He drew basically the entire team and then somehow whipped a pass to Bogut.
Curry's ability to drive to the basket and do those reverse layups has been fun to watch. He has really good body control and just knows where he is in the air.
I think that is a big difference between Curry and Klay Thompson this year. Not only has their defense improved but they have been driving to the basket a lot more this season. They didn’t really do that a lot last year.
CBSSports.com: If you could pick three or four Warriors to form a band, who would be in it?
Adam Duritz: (Laughs) I haven’t the slightest idea man but I would make the lead singer Manute Bol for sure.
CBSSports.com: Fair enough. If the Warriors picked a Counting Crows song to be their anthem, what would it be?
Adam Duritz: I can’t really see our music being an anthem for the Warriors but maybe “Hanginaround.”
CBSSports.com: Is "Mr. Jones" also a huge Warriors fan?
Adam Duritz: Marty Jones? Oh yeah, man! He’s a huge Warriors fan. We used to get together and play basketball at the Hearst Courts in Berkeley all the time.
CBSSports.com: So in your opinion, the Warriors are going to win it all, right?
Adam Duritz: When you a real fan, you have the same thing every year. They will win it all.
I’ve often been wrong but I’m sure they going to win the championship this year. The NBA Playoffs are tough though. It is just so hard to win on the road. Which is why the Warriors' homecourt advantage is so key.
To have a distinct advantage in the playoffs you have to be good defensively and be great at home. The Warriors have both of those things so you have to like their chances.
I would love to see them win the championships, that sounds really fun for me. I wish I could be there for it but we will be on tour so my biggest hope is to be able to watch it live when it happens.
