Super Bowl 2024: Ranking the top 10 commercials from Chiefs-49ers; Arnold Schwarzenegger among featured stars

Super Bowl LVIII is in the books, and it was a great one. The Kansas City Chiefs pulled out a thrilling overtime win against the San Francisco 49ers, 25-22, but there was also plenty to talk about during breaks in the action.

As is always the case, companies pulled out all the stops to stand out from the crowd of commercials during the Super Bowl. Some were more effective than others, and we will be highlighting the more successful ones here tonight.

Most of the ads on this list were more comedic in nature, and they had celebrities or athletes poking some fun at themselves. Arnold Schwarzenegger had some fun with his accent, Ben Affleck embraced his Boston roots, and Christopher Walken addressed his many imitators.

Of course, there were commercials that tried to tug on the audience's heartstrings, and a few of them were highly effective in doing so. Kia, Google, and and NFL itself did well in that department, and they really separated themselves from the rest of the pack.

After a night full of excellent football and celebrity cameos during the commercial breaks, here are the top 10 commercials that aired during Super Bowl LVIII.

10. Mountain Dew | Aubrey Plaza Is Always Having a Blast

Plenty of Super Bowl commercials use celebrities to draw attention to their product, but they are elevated when the actors lean into their on-screen persona. That's what Aubrey Plaza does in this ad, displaying the same disinterested attitude that a few of her characters have had over the years. The ad really finished on a high note when her "Parks and Recreation" co-star Nick Offerman showed up riding a dragon.

9. State Farm | Like a Good Neighbaaa

State Farm had one of the more intriguing teasers, which seemed to be spoofing modern superhero movie trailers. The actual commercial focused more on Arnold Schwarzenegger struggling to say State Farm's tag line, "Like a good neighbor" in his Austrian accent. That provided some chuckles, but the reunion with "Twins" co-star and "backstabbah" Danny DeVito really elevated this into the top 10.

8. BetMGM | Tom Has Won Enough

Tom Brady appeared in a few Super Bowl commercials this year, and this isn't the only one that cracked the top 10, but it was one of the highlights of the night. Brady was good in this spot, but Vince Vaughn really stole the show when he scolded an elderly woman for being a "snitch." As a hockey fan, it also appeals to me when Wayne Gretzky makes any kind of appearance, so this was a win for BetMGM.

7. NFL | Born to Play

The NFL has gotten creative with its own Super Bowl commercials, and this one was no different. The idea of a young boy in Ghana feeling like his NFL dreams were out of reach tugged at the heart strings. As always, it's fun to see some of the NFL's biggest stars get involved, but the punch of the young boy making sure Osi Umenyiora was real at the end won me over.

6. CeraVe | Michael CeraVe

Taking the approach of "this celebrity's name sounds like our product's name" could be a recipe for failure, but this one landed. That is due in large part to the commitment of Michael Cera, a hilarious and criminally underrated actor, in my humble opinion. Cera gets some laughs by acting as though he's in some kind of cologne commercial, and it all comes together nicely in the end.

5. Kia | The Perfect 10

On a night when most companies seemed to take the comedy route, Kia took a more heartfelt approach, and it worked. The scene in which the young skater and her dad put on the full figure skating performance for her grandfather at home feels like something you'd see in a Pixar short before Toy Story 9 or something. It was a nice changeup in a sea of comedic ads.

4. BMW | Talkin' Like Walken

The premise for this commercial was simple and relatable. When it comes to celebrity impressions, has anyone been imitated more than Christopher Walken? He has to be near the top of the most-impressioned list. BMW takes that concept and applies it to its own machinery in this ad. It was nicely done, and it's always a treat to see Walken on the screen in any context.

3. Google Pixel | Javier in Frame

No ad had me feeling things more than this one from Google Pixel. Going through Javier's life, with more loved ones getting added into the frame was honestly kind of heartwarming. The final line of, "Three faces in frame," really got me. Now, is that because I am also a soon-to-be father? Sure, but I still stand by the opinion that this was the most heartfelt commercial of the evening.

2. Dunkin' | Popstar

Getting Ben Affleck and Matt Damon together is a winner every time. I'm not sure if it's just that half of my family is from New England or that they're both genuinely funny actors, but they just move the needle for me. This one was fun because it played on the dynamic of their close friendship, and it got a little extra starpower involved with Jennifer Lopez and Tom Brady making appearances too.

1. Paramount+ | Mountain of Entertainment

People might say I'm biased. People might say, "Of course a Paramount employee would rank this No. 1." I hear that criticism and point your attention to Sir Patrick Stewart hurling a children's cartoon into the side of a cliff with encouragement from Lt. Dangle. And Jeff Probst playing air guitar on a torch to Creed. And the ominous implication that Peppa Pig might be the next cartoon to get thrown into a wall of rocks. This is the best one. End of story.
